Advice for a mom
Question:
I would recommend not only trying out for every play in the school (which I’m assuming your kid does) But also go around the colleges (a 20 year old can’t play off a kid under 13 very well) and expect no pay for a while. Get him the advances in credits.

What advice can you give to the mother of a young actor (7 years old)? He has an agent in the Dallas area. He’s taken acting classes (creative dramatics and some theater classes), but has not had any paying acting jobs as of yet. He’s done mainly print work. We’ve heard that he might have an advantage because of his size (he’s very small for his age). Is this true?
IMHO, looking younger than you are is as helpful to a seven-year olds career as a 37 year olds. I directed a seven-year old as hostess of an improv show last year. She was very smart and savvy for seven (if a bit hyper) and based on our press release, an agent called her in for an interview. The agent advised the mom (also in our cast) that since the kid was tall for her age, that commercial work was less likely. I was disappointed for both of them, but the agent (who specializes in children for the agency) presumably knows best for her business. I agree with the previous post, though. Inquire at the college, professional, and non-equity theaters, and they will call you in if and when they have a need. But remember, to have fun. — Keith Privett Telemachus Productions & ImprovOlympic, Chicago

To that I’d add community theatre; they can always use a kid who can act. It’s also a good way for him to find out if acting is really what he wants. Most actors catch "the bug" in community theatre. Also, student films are an excellent way to build up credits/tape.
