Bobby Hoffman?
Question:
Okay Ed, here’s something else. It appears that Alphy Hoffman’s casting agency, will be casting for the movie "Stone Soup", which will be shot here in town next spring. Is THAT a reason to do a workshop with them?
That film was being cast in LA last month. Even Nashville people.

Is THAT a reason to do a workshop with them? I would rather call my agent, and have her talk to this person and pitch me for the movie, than actually have to pay and go to the workshop. She’ll be in town for one evening: is there anything in particular that I can tell my agent? For instance, would it be suitable to have my agent contact Alphy while she’s in town for that evening, having her submit my materials to her and then talk me up for a role in the movie? — Opus (: "I wish the stage were as high and narrow as a tightrope so that only the most highly trained would dare to venture out upon it." –Meyerhold http://www.Carla.Coble.com – Acting site; not all links are viable yet. http://members.home.net/coble/OpusGraphics -Websets and Graphics http://drewcarey.acmecity.com/kate/43 -Blade Pro Presets

What do you mean, "even Nashville people"? How do you know? And why did my e-mail say that part of the reason for this agency’s visit was to cast for this movie? Okay Ed, here’s something else. Well, I posed some questions to the lady who sent me the e-mail, and she wrote me back this morning, but mainly, she told me to go straight to the horses mouth and gave me the Hoffman Casting e-mail: Thanks for your opinions on this. I just don’t understand why people think this kind of thing will bolster a career? What the hell do they think a workshop is going to give them that a scene study, or technique study hasn’t already? I didn’t think there was anything wrong with having my agent at least contact him while here in town. I mean hell, if she could get me a smaller role, I don’t care. You said yourself that it would be smaller speaking roles cast from here; I don’t have a problem with that right now. I’m not involved in anything else except the Meisner. I wouldn’t be a background player, simply because I don’t want to take time away from the Meisner for that, but if I had a speaking role, that would be okay. Oh; my point. I wrote and asked him some questions about his operation, and one being, exactly who he was. I am curious to see what he says. I’m trying to gather all the facts in order to let some of the other actors in this area know. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Okay Ed, here’s something else. Certainly, Alphy Hoffman wants you to THINK that taking a workshop with her will increase your chances of being cast in "Stone Soup". Look, Opus, casting just does not work like this. Let’s presume Alphy is actually casting something, which is in itself not a certainty. And let’s presume it is shooting in your city. If it is a SAG feature, it will be cast in Hollywood. What you’ll get in your city are extras and maybe one and two liners, and those gigs will likely be cast through someone local. Alphy Hoffman wants your money, and she is willing to take her dog and pony show to your city to get it. Shameful. Ed Hooks

No, Alphy is the guy’s son.
Son, daughter, widow….whatever he/she is, he/she is still trying to trade on the name of Bobby Hoffman who, as you pointed out, is DEAD! That alone should be reason enough to avoid the person. Ed Hooks

I KNOW THAT for myself. I put this into question because the e-mail I got, mentioned Stone Soup among its other casting projects. I was trying to get my facts straight, before letting the others know about it. If I find out it’s a scam I’m certainly not going to keep it to myself. If it is a SAG feature, it will be cast in Hollywood.
Yes, and it appears that the lady who sent me the initial e-mail was requested in LA to read for one of the principals when it was being cast as Dave said, over a month ago. She was requested because she had done previous workshops with him. Looks like that was a good thing for her.

Has anyone heard of this guy? Or Alphy Hoffman? Apparently, someone from this town is bringing them here to do a Cold Reading Workshop, and I wondered if anyone had heard of them. I guess they did casting for: "Happy Day’s" "Laverne & Shirley", "Phat Beach"(feature film), "Lenny Frick", "ABC Daytime Casting", "The New Love American Style", "Mork & Mindy" and many more including stage, and television commercials. $45.00 for 4 hours. Hoffman is a nice man, wears a jaunty hat, is older than the hills. I don’t think he’s done any actual casting for several years. He’ll spend your $45 telling war stories about "Happy Days." Frankly, I’d rather spend it on a nice bottle of Chianti. Ed Hooks

Thanks Ed, but after I posted this today, I went back and re-read my e-mail, and Alphy Hoffman will be the one coming, since Bobby died in 1992. Sorry I didn’t say that sooner. But, your advice probably still applies.
Oh Jesus. We’ve descended to the point where the wife of a DEAD casting director can get $45 from wannabees?! I give up. Ed Hooks

No different than the third wife of a long dead acting teacher running a bi-coastal school bearing his name, teaching classes and name dropping about people she never met. Or the nephew (?) of a famous deceased actress/acting teacher carrying on a school in her name. (to name but a few.) Linda reminding myself everyday it’s all about showBUSINE$$
