getting an agent

The question had to do with getting an agent in Dallas…where there are only 9 or 10 agents (and probably only about 5 who would be best to send to, depending on level of experience). I shudder to think of sending out tapes to all LA agents! There’s no way I would recommend sending a tape to all agents….if you’ve
got the money to send a tape to 75 or more agents, then go for it.

anyone got a 9-5 job out there? I have a 9-5 job. I hate it too, but you got to do what you got to do. I’ve always been completely honest about my acting and auditions with all of my employers, so…they’ve never given me any slack for when I have to run off in the middle of the day to audition. When I lived in L.A., I worked the night shift – that worked out well as far as auditioning for T.V. and movies and commercials because most of them are during the day. Theatre on the other hand was a little more tricky – but if they want you they work with you – that’s what I’ve found anyway. By the way, the "send headshot/resume first and then video on request" strategy sounds good to me. You have to drive 5 hours to get to Dallas? There aren’t any agents any closer than that? Wow! And I thought having to drive 2 hours – sometimes – to an audition was bad. Perspective – I got some! There’s no way I would recommend sending a tape to all agents. Just so you know … I just moved to L.A. about two months ago. First of all, let me tell you what *I* did. The day I got here (well, just about), I went to Step Won Talent Consultants. What the heck, I had money to blow. They took a look at my pictures and resume. We made some minor shifts to the resume, but the two pictures I was using were considered good. Then, Mitch over at Step Won gave me a list of 75 agents that he has earmarked as "accepting submissions". I sent my two pictures with resumes attached to each of the 75 with a simple cover letter. I got about 7 or 8 responses. They all called me in for an interview and 4 or 5 of them were willing to sign me. None of them asked for a video tape. Is this foolproof? Nope. I have a good friend (well, I’ve known her three weeks or so, but she’s become a good friend) who did the same thing (minus actually going to see Mitch) and she hasn’t gotten a single call and it’s been almost three weeks. What’s the difference? Probably my picture. I have a killer head shot. Neither one of us are SAG. Neither one of us have much experience. If you’ve got a great headshot, I’d recommend just putting a post-it note on your picture that says "Tape available upon request" or something like that. On the flip side, if you’ve got the money to send a tape to 75 or more agents, then go for it. It’s a marketing tool. They’ve all got a Television and VCR in the office – usually right there in front of them. Take care, Harris I’m making changes to my web site, be sure to check out www.tangled.com when you get the chance. * * * * * [This message was posted to the ACTING-L mailing list and relayed to this newsgroup. I’m curious which agents these are that responded. When I was living in L.A., not belonging to SAG was a definite hurdle in getting a good agent. Lucky for me I got my SAG card before I moved there – and that only made it a *little* bit easier. I wanted to get some opinions on getting an agent. I’m going to start trying some Dallas agencies, but I’m not too keen on driving 5 hours for an audition. A friend of mine suggested I video tape 3 different monologues to send to agents. My thoughts are that it could be a monumental waste of postage if an agent isn’t interested in me. I thought what I would perhaps do instead is send headshot and resume along with a note mentioning the videotape, should they be interested. If they are, I then send the video tape with a note saying I would be happy to have a personal meeting with them at their convenience. Do you think that would work? I can imagine pros and cons on both side, but I can’t imagine which side outweighs the other. Also because of my crappy job my friend has replaced me in her new theatre group. Or at least that’s the way it sounds. Can’t really blame her. I’m surprised she kept me as long as she did. She did say that she wanted me for the next show, whenever and whatever that would be. Well I just have one thing to say — anyone got a 9-5 job out there? ‘Cause I am outta here!!
