Need a job as an actrice
Question:
Hello, my name is Caroline Thomas and I’d really would like to be an actrice. I’m from Holland and I speak English, Dutch and a bit German and a bit French. I have a bit experience, because I work now in a musical. And I’ve done a musical on junior high. I did 2 years ballet and half year classic. I song in junior high and I still sing. If you want to know more about me you can go to: http://home.t-online.de/home/bernd.thomas Can somebody please give me a job as an actrice?

Good grief, Caroline! I visited your home page, and it is HUGE. It almost crashed my computer! And it took more than two minutes to load. All that aside, you aren’t likely to get any acting jobs by posting on the internet. You’ll need an agent. Ed Hooks

Hey Ed, Give the young lady a break, ok? :-) If she coded that page (big as it is) by herself, I’m impressed. It’s unusual to find someone her age so technically competant. If she’s a little inexperienced, that’s to be expected. Ed’s right about the agent though Caroline. Also, don’t neglect more training and experience. Take acting classes and do as much acting as you can in anything you can get, even if it doesn’t pay. The best way to learn is to do it. The best way to get noticed is while doing it. Peter

the only thing I need now is an agent. How do I get one??…
I presume talent agents operate the same in your country as they do in the U.S. They earn commissions on the income you earn as an actress. If so, that means the agents are inspired to represent new talent by the prospect of high earnings. If they think you will work, in other words, they’ll grab you. If not, they’ll pass. Your job is to create the dynamic of success. You need a good head shot. The one on your website is not so good, in my opinion. Not happy enough. But then, maybe things are different in your country…. Maybe the kind of shot you have is what they want? If you have an actor’s union in your country, contact it and ask for guidance. Ed Hooks

My father and I made the homepage together. He made it I wrote it. Ed’s right about the agent though Caroline. Also, don’t neglect more training and experience. Take acting classes and do as much acting as you can in anything you can get, even if it doesn’t pay.
I already take acting classes every Tuesday and Thursday. And I have some lines in a musical and I had to pay $40 to play in that musical. So, the only thing I need now is an agent. How do I get one?? The best way to learn is to do it. The best way to get noticed is while doing it.
How?? To walk naked on stage?? Caroline

I doubt walking naked on stage is necessary. My suggestion would be to train for a while in acting classes. Then, once you’ve gotten some training experience and a solid work ethic under your belt, then go out and try to get an agent. If you are going to be in Los Angeles, they have listings of many agents in The Working Actors Guide to LA (I think that’s the title.) It also has listings for acting schools, headshot photographers, voice coaches, and a whole lot more. Even once you get work, though, I would recommend to keep training. Think of it as exercising at a gym: the only way to stay fit is to keep working out. I’m still in acting school, and most of my acting experience is limited to school plays, student films, and film and television crews. However, a lot of people at my acting school had no acting experience before they began, and now several years later are making a good living as actors. To sum things up, if walking naked on stage is something you want to do, then by all means go ahead. However, there are definitely a lot of other ways to make a living, and there are a lot of other ways to get noticed while pursuing an acting career. From the times I’ve read this newsgroup, Ed Hooks has been very active in it, so I would listen to what he has to say even though I don’t know him. Good luck, Jim
