Little Shop Of horrors

Question:

I did Audrey a number of years ago and it remains my all-time favorite role. "Mean Green Mother from Outer Space" was written specifically for the movie, and there’s a different song at the opening of the second act (my least favorite — I can see why it was struck from the movie musical), but other than that, there aren’t any *major* music changes.  The ending, as someone already pointed out, is completely different, so that music is also different, but it’s relatively short. I live for the day when I can once again be sucked into the mouth of a large, man-eating plant like a string of cooked spaghetti in white lingerie…… Michele                                 * * * * * [This message was posted to the ACTING-L mailing list and relayed to this newsgroup.  You may followup to the newsgroup or, if you are a  member of ACTING-L,  reply  to  the  list.   For  more  information  send E-mail to

# My God! the music is Awesome! I loved it from the first measure. So sure # enough I decided to audition for the part of the Dentist (Steve Martin) in # the movie. To warn you, though, the movie ends with a happy ending.  The musical does not.  Also, if I remember correctly, there are some differences between the musical numbers. Yes Mike you are absolutely right. I got the Off Broadway original cast CD. The Music is different. New songs. But you know what? It’s even better than the movie! Fred

Don’t even think of playing this role until you’ve seen the original Roger Corman classic. I met Corman at a workshop and he told the story of how the film was made:  on a bet, 24 hours and $1,000 budget, actors out of acting class.  Jack Nicholson’s dentist proves he was even then a virtuoso.  Norma in L.A.                                 * * * * * [This message was posted to the ACTING-L mailing list and relayed to this newsgroup.  You may followup to the newsgroup or, if you are a  member of ACTING-L,  reply  to  the  list.   For  more  information  send E-mail to

Hi everyone! It’s me again Fred. Remember the Captain Walker Story in Tommy. Anyway, last Saturday night I heard that Diamond Head (Honolulu Hawaii)Theatre was having auditions for Little Shop of Horrors. I had never seen the movie so by curiosity I decided to rent it at blockbuster. My God! the music is Awesome! I loved it from the first measure. So sure enough I decided to audition for the part of the Dentist (Steve Martin) in the movie. Of course I had nothing prepared so I brought music for Be Bop-a-lula from Gene Vincent and asked to sing it. Directors loved it and asked me to sing the Dentist song. I explained I did not prepare it and that I didn’t even know it. However I also explained that I learned the whole part of Captain Walker (The Who’s Tommy) in 24 hr.. So they asked me to learn the song and come back Sunday at 2:00PM. Now here’s the catch: This part plays 9 characters! One of them a woman. Can you believe it! 9 characters…So I thought I’d bring a doctors note from my psychiatrist to certify that I have a split personality disorder and that I indeed have 9 personalities. See, I don’t believe in being just a number during auditions. You’ve got to shock them somehow. Now they may hate you but at least they’ll remember you. 200 applicants came in for 7 roles available. I’ll let you all know how it went. A couple of years ago, i had the wonderful opportunity to play the part of Mr. Mushnik —- and the show has some songs that aren’t inthe movie, such as "Mushnik & Son"!!!   A great song — And since I’m not a singer, and I was able to do it as a "character", it went well —         The show certainly can be considered a little wierd, but that’s what makes iit fun to do and to see!!!         Don Squire                                 * * * * * [This message was posted to the ACTING-L mailing list and relayed to this newsgroup.  You may followup to the newsgroup or, if you are a  member of ACTING-L,  reply  to  the  list.   For  more  information  send E-mail to
