Musical theater audition question

Question:

For the gospel song, listen to ‘Everybodys Free’ on the Romeo and Juliet soundtrack. Vikki

Response:

Two of the best in my repertoire are fairly recent songs written by the composer of this new musical.  I really think I’d be putting my best foot forward (so to speak) by singing one of his songs,

Bad choice.  The composer has, in his head, what those songs "should" sound like, and I can assure you no human being who has ever lived has ever done them to his ultimate satisfaction.  And all he will hear as you sing is the fact that you sing it differently. HE won’t be aware of it: asked, he’ll even deny it.  But choose something else. Something he has an emotional distance from.  It’s the same reason you shouldn’t audition with a song from the show you’re auditioning for; they will hear your take on it, and it will not be their take.   The casting process is long and tedious for the auditioner.  You see a lot of lousy performances, a few decent ones, and one or two really good ones.   Pretty soon you catch yourself hearing one or two words and deciding right then.  Don’t feed this tendency!! }:-)      Christopher Jahn, AEA

Response:

Hi gang, I realize the majority of people on this list are play or film actors, but I know many of you are quite knowledgeable about the almighty audition.  I’m auditioning this weekend for the chorus of a new musical.  I have to sing one musical theater song and 1 pop/country/gospel song.  I’m not worried about the pop song; I have one.  What I’m worried about is my choice of contemporary mt song.  Two of the best in my repertoire are fairly recent songs written by the composer of this new musical.  I really think I’d be putting my best foot forward (so to speak) by singing one of his songs, but I don’t want it to look like I’m this overzealous super fan who is trying to impress in any way he can. I have other songs which work very well, too, but these songs really show off where my voice and acting ability are right now. Thoughts?  Comments?  I’d truly appreciate it. Thanks, Eric
