Acting Classes

Question:

Plus, what is the difference between agents and managers? Managers seem to be everywhere…agents nowhere. Justin

A manager sort of oversees a performer’s career and, for this, typically take 15% of the performer’s earnings.  A talent agent is essentially a booking service, although many agents would claim to be more personally involved with their clients. SAG-approved (i.e. SAG franchised) agents collect 10% of the actor’s earnings.  Many performers have both an agent and a manager. Mangagers are not licensed by the state, by the way.  They have a professional association of some sort but, basically, anybody can call himself an manager.  So be careful.  Agents are licensed by the state as a form of employment agency, like Kelly Girls or Manpower. Non-franchised talent agents can take up to 20% of a performer’s earnings.  That’s the state legal maximum in California. Where can I find the best classes in LA? It seems there is a school on every corner. Justin

If I were going to take a class in LA right now, I’d look up Joan Darling.  Great teacher, lives in Santa Fe now and commutes into LA to teach on weekends.   Playhouse West is where Jeff Goldblum teaches, and it has a good rep. Basically, you need to talk to a lot of actors about which teachers/schools are good.  You’ll hear the same names surface again and again. Ed Hooks
