getting started

Question:

hello I am 18 years old I am interested in acting but I did not take drama in high school and I am taking a year off school when I do go should I take acting class are how should I get started in to acting

If you’d like to start taking acting classes now, check w/ theatres (community & professional) in your area–some of them probably hold adult acting classes, & you probably won’t need any previous experience to take them. Also, see plays whenever you can & watch what the actors are doing. And start reading plays, so that when you begin auditioning, you’ll be familiar w/ a number of different monologues & the works they appeared in. Good luck! Mary

One gets started in acting by acting. Find when auditons are at a local community theater and try out for a part. At first even accept walk-ons; this will get you plugged into theater life; it is a distinct subculture. The experienced actors will tell you who’s who and what’s what on the local scene. —     *                Daly City California:                *     *       where San Francisco meets The Peninsula       *     ******* and the San Andreas Fault meets the Sea *******

I would like to know how to get into unions. If anyone can help please email

Bridget, depending on area you are in, there are a number of different unions that one could potentially join. In the US, there is The Screen Actors Guild (SAG) at http://www.sag.org. This union covers actor who work in film & commercials. There is The American Federation of Television & Radio Artists (AFTRA). This union covers performers who work on radio and/or on videotape. Not sure of the URL tho, could be http://www.aftra.org. In Canada, there is The Alliance of canadian Cinema, Television & Radio Artists which is a combination of SAG & AFTRA rolled into one. They are located at http://www.actra.com. A more thorough site for ACTRA can be found at the ACTRA Toronto performers site at http://www.actratoronto.com. This union covers performers in Canada who work in English language media. Performers who work in French are covered by The Union desArtists (UdA). I’m not sure of their website. There is also EQUITY which coveres performers who work in theatre. All of these unions have a number of different ways one may fulfill the particular union’s entry requirements. This information can be found by doing a quick search through their websites. Hope That helps, Drama Queen
