How in God's name do I get started.

Question:

I have been bitten by the acting bug in a big way. I did a show at my local theater and I received great reviews. Where should I even begin to start if I want to do this professionally? I am just looking for a little direction. Kathie33 http://www.bestoftheweb.com -A better search engine. See why Media Metrix says we’re the fastest-growing search engine. Before you buy.

you already started get experience first…when you’ve done enough to know the sort of roles you should be going for in the business then maybe it’s time to start looking for an agent and a paycheck also take acting classes…when and where you can find them — eric "the show’s not over till the brass section reach the bar"

Depends on many things, Kathie, and is different for everyone.  Training in many disciplines is a must, and much more experience than one show at a "local theatre." Which can mean anything, btw. The "local theatre" in East Armpit, Saskatchewan, differs greatly from the "local theatre" in Ocean View, Kansas, for instance….. hmmm, bad analogy, but you get my drift. And don’t believe the reviewers.  If you place a glory in the good ones, you’d better be prepared to suffer the bad ones as well. Age matters, as well as education. You’ll need classes, a set of monologues (at least six of various types), headshot, resume, possibly representation if it looks like you have what it takes. Among the other things it takes is single-minded devotion to the art and craft, putting your career ahead of family and friends, who will mock you mercilessly.  Plan on moving a lot, unless you already live in a Big City.
