Question:

I used to refer to those performances where everybody’s ‘in it’ as the nights when God comes to see the show.

Ooh-  I LOVE that.  Very nice imagery. — Opus    (: http://www.Carla.Coble.com – Acting site; not all links are viable yet. http://members.home.net/coble/OpusGraphics -Websets and Graphics http://drewcarey.acmecity.com/kate/43 -Blade Pro Presets "Well my dad has only had 4 bypasses, and he eats all the steak he wants."– Hank Hill

When I took the Meisner classes, I too, had such an experience with a much younger and inexperienced actor. I scared this person half to death. She said I acted so real……You know the thing that is odd about the Meisner teachings for me,  is that I have always felt real in all the characters I’ve ever played. I  just thought that was what acting was all about. What I learned from Meisner was control. While we were sitting there discussing the scene, I had to begin physically calming myself down.  I reached over to grab my partner’s hand, just to let her know it was all in the scene.  She understood. Later, back in our seats, I asked her why she began to laugh.  She said that suddenly, she knew my anger was real, and it made her so uncomfortable that her organic response was to just laugh; a nervous laughter. Oh, what a nice thing to share.   I’ve seen (and felt) stuff in my old Meisner class that’s just remarkable, people laughing and crying at the same time, the most amazing, truthful responses.   I used to refer to those performances where everybody’s ‘in it’ as the nights when God comes to see the show.   I ALLOWED MYSELF TO CONNECT WITH THE ACTIVITY AND TO LET THAT INTERACTION WITH THE

Oh, yeah.  Realizing that you can develop a technique to put yourself in that place every time you work is so tremendous.  Thanks for the reminder. Break legs with "M4M"!

As I’ve previously inferred, I’m studying Meisner.  Last night, in my scene, I was working off of a gal who had done this before, so she was good.  I had entered the class thinking that I wasn’t going to be able to open up emotionally, or connect emotionally to the material or character when the time came. But last night it happened, and it was so unexpected, that I felt as if I was being lifted out of my body and sailing through the room.  We were doing a scene in which I was painting and she came in, deciding to bug the crap out of me.  I didn’t plan to get upset, but for once in my life, I decided to just immerse myself in the activity and not *try* to make it go anywhere.  As the scene progressed, I noticed that our repartee became more relaxed, as did I.  A few minutes later however, when the bugging continued, suddenly, from someplace inside of my gut, I exploded onto her, and she began laughing, which made it even worse.  I just let it fly.  At first I felt weird and began to instinctively stop myself, but as soon as I got out of my head and back into the scene, it just felt very natural.  The instructor let us go for what seemed like forever.  And by the time he stopped us, I was just beginning to feel those tears well up inside of me, as I cry when I’m angry.  I ALLOWED MYSELF TO CONNECT WITH THE ACTIVITY AND TO LET THAT INTERACTION WITH THE After it was over, the instructor said that we had done a good job.  He didn’t know how I felt as if I were flying, but he said to the class, that when you’re connected the way you ought to be, it will feel like you’re flying!  I’m studying to be a private pilot, and that was the only metaphor I could find.  Funny that he said the same. While we were sitting there discussing the scene, I had to begin physically calming myself down.  I reached over to grab my partner’s hand, just to let her know it was all in the scene.  She understood. Anyway, I’ve also been cast in their production of "Measure for Measure", and I’m very excited about it.  We had our first rehearsal tonight.  It’s been a long time since I’ve done Shakespeare, but Bill is a great teacher, so I think I’ll do okay. Just wanted to share the good news, and encourage you all to keep reaching for nothing less than the truth in acting.  You’ll never want to go back to the old way once you’ve been there.
