Lesson Plan: Ideal Length?

Question:

I’m putting together an extensive Lesson Plan Guide for Teachers and I know that the time teachers have with students varies. M-W-F classes and T-T classes, weekend classes and high school classes and private classes etc.etc. From the help many of you provided on rehearsal schedules, I was able to decide on how to frame the Directors Guide section of the book, hopefully, with your help, the Teachers Guide section will also be in line with the needs of teachers. My own classes are three hours long and going through many years of notes on what I used at various points in training and why, I feel I’ve got it in an optimum order, now I have to break that up into usable chunks. When I taught college, I had two hour classes, when I went to college, we usually had an hour and a half for acting class. I was too busy working to hook up with drama in high school, so I don’t know what the set up is there. As before, your suggestions are valued and in the best of all possible worlds, through them, I will be able to offer a book that serves your needs, be you actor, teacher, director, or all three. I’m also writing this book for me. In the past I would always sit down a few hours before each class and devise my lesson plan for that class. Now I will be able to go to a book and it will all be there, nice and neat. I realize now that that lack of specific organization might have been a weakness in my previous books and I am determined that this one will not suffer that fault. Thanks again. Response:

I know that at the college I attended, the class periods were only 50-80 minutes longs, and that was never really enough time.  (My last acting class there allowed for voluntary time afterwards, but I always had another class scheduled then).  The class I’m taking at a local studio runs 2 hours, and that seems to feel about right for me at the present time.  Later I may want longer class periods, but right now… hope this helps! jeff h
