Need to know good acting schools in NYC
Question:
I’ve attended a lot of classes at HB, it’s a good school for beginners. For one thing classes are $7 each so you’re not throwing away a ton of money just to see whether you like and are capable of acting or not. I’ve generally had very good experiences there. The two biggest drawbacks I’ve seen are, class size CAN be quite big, up to 35. But generally that’s not the case, and they get smaller as the term goes on. I had an improv class go from 35 to 12 in 8 weeks. Also it can be difficult in scene study classes to meet with partners, because it’s more of a beginner’s school, people work. Of course, that depends on the luck of the draw and how committed you & your scene partner are to meeting. Generally, again, I’ve had good experiences. My teachers, have for the most part, all been seasoned professionals with distinguished educations and careers who are there because they really enjoy teaching. (Well, it’s certainly not for the huge salaries.) Oh and you can audit any class for $5 and trial many for $7, so I, and HB, highly recommend you do that. If you want specific teacher recommendations, I’d be happy to do that too. Scott

Does anyone know of any reputable acting schools in NYC?(Preferrably for film/T.V.) I’m from out of state so I don’t have the yellow pages for New York and not all acting schools are on the web either. Thanks.

Not sure where in NYC you are, but two school not far from each other would be: Stella Adler and a few blocks away around the block from the New York Film Academy would be the Lee Strasberg Institute. I have heard positive things about both schools. I went to the Starsberg school and found it to be a very intensive school. I learned alot. The teacher’s care. But it is a method you should familiarize yourself with before you go. The Institute is not for everybody, though. However, just because there is no audition to get in doesn’t make it bad. There is a 40 minute interview session with includes a 15 minute video take of Lee himself (he has passed on if you didn’t know that).Take advantage of these 40 minutes. You’ll learn alot just from the interview. Their number is: 212-533-5500. 90% of the students are from England, South America and other European countries – many who are already celebrities/models in their own countries. You can learn alot form them as well. My friend went to Stella. I can’t tell you much. If you want NYC training, but WEST of the Hudson. Try, Actor’s Creative Experience,Ltd. Laurei Sherman Graff brought the school from L.A. to Nyack, NY and has been very successful with it. The students are her testimonial. I preferred going to NYC, but I took some TV commercial seminars there in Nyack. I hear they lean towards Meisner Method, but their faculty is trained in various methods. Call the school up and get on their mailing list for courses, events and faculty bios. Their number is: 914-348-3915. The Herbert Berghof Studio (HB Studio) in NYC is something you might want to consider if you’re strapped for cash. They give professional class training at a descent price. I have not gone there. My acting friends have various opinions: Great! to Don’t waste your time. My opionion? Call them at 212-675-2370, get a Brochure of Classes, and ask them if you can sit inon a class so see if you like it. Ultimately Pat, you will have to find the school which is best for you – where the chemistry is good. Don’t limit yourself to one method. However, it takes at least 2+ years to fully grasp the concepts, so my opinion is that you should never MIX the methods. Stay away from the schools that make you pay for an audition and then make you audition again the next year. If you fail, they kickyou out! Thenyou have to start all over with another school. I underdstand they want to protray professionalism and discipline, but you’re the one who is going to be paying them to learn. Finally, always get a third opinion! Good luck and catch ya on the set!
