God help us if medicine actually made us feel good.

Screwy laws…! I took Ritilan for a while for memory and concentration. I had to drive 35 miles to pick up the prescription because it could not be called in to the druggest…..or mailed to me. When I got home I put it in an envelope and mailed it to Pa and they mailed (US MAIL) the meds to me. As usual the right hand has no idea what the left one is doing! I enjoy being here (mostly?). Suzanne/Florida – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Dr. just called in 10 mg Hydrocodone script to my pharmacy (didn’t even know hydro’s existed in that strength) … It baffles me why they can’tcall in percocet The bureaucrats decided that Percocet (oxycodone) was a stronger opiate than hydrocodone. Although some people get better relief from hydrocodone, it is still the law that they can’t call in a script for oxycodone products. Remember now, we’re dealing with a FEDERAL agency’s decision.
Response:
Furthermore, today, many Docs believe (I think falsely) that Hydrocodone actually is disphoric
What is ‘disphoric’? Tried to look it up, no go. Do people find that it makes them feel bad?
I had it for some surgery last summer, couldn’t tell a whit of effect. Generic Ibuprofen worked where Hydrocodone didn’t.

Ya know– You finally post a real bunch of words, then you revert to the ’same old idiot’ you’ve been all along! Shame on your parents for not investing the time to bring you up properly.

DYSPHORIA is an unpleasant feeling. Might include anxiety, fear, hallucinations, or just feeling WEIRD. The opposite of euphoria. JAck

(Yajesjs) writes: Any question, you can email me. Oh, Class 1 drugs are the ones that the DEA says your naughty if you take, like Marijuana, LSD, XTC, etc..
what is XTC?
Response:
Just pronounce each letter XTC = Ectasy Which I believe is MDMA or if you like full names Methylene Dioxy-Methamphetamine HCl (hydrochloride) Presently being used expermentally to induce a more suggestive state for understanding yourself and others in Psychiatry in other countries. Of course, illegal here. Probably the most popular drug in England right now! Has been labeled incorrectly as a hallucinogen by the DEA, which it is not. It has been suggested this drug be called an "Empathogen" promoting positive feelings of empathy towards others. OK?

Thanks. Strange, my spellchecker doesn’t even flag the erroneous spelling, so I assumed my dictionary was merely lacking.

You’re welcome Kalli. Is your computer a product of the public school system? Jack

Hey Stan, Thanks for the info – I haven’t read about all the classes since nursing school – it was a comprehensive, quick review.
Shell – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – OK, I guess this is one area I can help pewople with being a pharmacist (retired, Basically Controlled Substances are classed in 5 categories. Class I, 2, 3, 4, 5. Forget Class 1. Class 2 are just about all pure Narcotics, Amphetamines, Barbital derivatives (sleepers) etc. etc. These rx’s can only be filled by a written prescription. One exception, in case of dire emergencies Doc can call in, a 48 hr supply (if I remember correctly). But this still needs to be followed up with a written back-up ASAP. Percodan and Oxycodone products are included in Class 2. Why? When the Class Laws were made up in 1971 or so? (Thats the DEA Act of blah blah) it was felt that Oxycodone was too strong to be called in, even though Percodan is a combination product. Class 2 Drugs are rarely combos. All other Controlled Substances fall into either 3, 4 or occasionally exempt narcotics which go into Class 5. Those are the ones you sign for in a Pharmacy in some states for a small amount, like Robittusin with Codeine, etc. Few states have 5 any more. Anyway Hydrocodone has a funny history. For most of its life it was treated as nothing more than a cough preparation and was never prescribed as a pain reliever. Hydrocodone has excellant cough suppressant properties. So you see it in mucho cough preps. Tussinoex, Hycodan, etc. I believe it was Knoll Pharmaceuticals who first thought to use Hydrocodone in combo with Tylenol and called it Vicodin. It still never sold well, until Knoll got some help from Madison Avenue Advertising Folks who convinced Drs it was a great pain killer, longer acting than Codeine. (which it is). So basically it has always been class 3, except for pure Hydrocodone which Pharmacists used to carry to make up cough preps, that of course was Class 2. In most testing hydrocodones main advantage over Codeine is its longer action. They both have good oral potency as does Oxycodone. It is not considered as strong a euphoria producing drug as Oxycodone, so it remains in Class 3. However if people (and you know who you are) continue to abuse it (as its being abused today), the feds will kick it up to Class 2 and take away the only real good preparation for pain control that is in Class 3 other than Codeine with Tylenol. That would make Doctors and Patients very unhappy. The 10 mg prep has been around for awhile, I guess the next thing, some manufacturer will go for a 12 1/2 mg tab? Any question, you can email me. Oh, Class 1 drugs are the ones that the DEA says your naughty if you take, like Marijuana, LSD, XTC, etc…. So be good, for goodness sakes! Your friendly retired druggist Stan

I was wondering if in other states are you required to give your social security number when picking up class 2 narcotics from a pharmacy? I picked up some oxycontin recently for my wife at a pharmacy that is in a major grocery store and the pharmacy aid asked for her SS number. I acted dumb and said I didn’t know it. They said that I would need it next time. They got her medicare number, they got her HMO/medicare number and they got a scrip from her doc with his DEA number on it, IMO that’s enough! I am in Kentucky, which is the most backward state in the Union. Any other states require this? marc
Response:
I thought I made that clear in my previous comment? Oxycodone is considered by people who try controlled substances for a living, to be of a "higher" abuse potential than Hydrocodone. Up to1971 or so, the more addicting a drug was physically, the more controlled it was. Thats why in the 1960’s Amphetamines and Barbituates were easy to get because they were Class C narcotics, considered to have a low addiction potential. But after the 1971 Drug Control Act, drugs were classified by abuse potential and not by physical addiction potential. Furthermore, today, many Docs believe (I think falsely) that Hydrocodone actually is disphoric rather than euphoric, hence the popularity of its use today! Do people find that it makes them feel bad? In my opinion, no. But I’m just a retired pharmacist, hey what do I know? Stan

Dr. just called in 10 mg Hydrocodone script to my pharmacy (didn’t even know hydro’s existed in that strength) … It baffles me why they can’t call in percocet — though the hydrocodone seems to be just as strong & help just as much as percs–so not really upset about this–just curious. Is this ignorant law a federal one or just state? Any ideas why this law even exists?
Response:
I have to have my scrip Oxycodone mailed in to my pharmacy or picked up at the Dr.s office. The same with my Oxycontin. Not my other meds tho. He just calls my Fiorecette in along with other meds. Maybe it is different depending on which state you live in. Interesting. Angel Bear (linda)

Check Tennessee state law.

Response:
To add to Stan’s clear explanation: The pharmacists will typically only allow you a call in on a limited amount of schedule II s if they know the prescribing doc, recognize his voice on the phone and trust him to bring over the paper scrip the next day. I have done this maybe 3 times in 18 years. The patients had to go way across town to see a pharmacist who I knew well enough to do me a big favor. BTW Stan, how do I get a schedule I license? <G — Barry K (DDS) (Delete the Hormel spiced ham product to reply) OK, I guess this is one area I can help pewople with being a pharmacist (retired,

Response:
As far as I know it is a Federal Law. My Pharmacist told me once that the reason Percocet can`t be called in and there are no refills unless a new script is written is because it is considered a highly "controlled" narcotic. Just like Demerol, Morphine & so on…That`s just what I`ve been told.

Marc, Kentucky isn’t the most backward state in the Union. Tennessee is – that’s where our resident troll lives. My state doesn’t require my SS for any scripts. Joan Humphrey
