Would it be worth relocating to find work?

Question:

I have only ~10 hrs of acting class and would like to do TV commercials. I live in Fort Worth, Tx. Would it be worth relocating to find work?

Response:

Probably not, Shane.  Others may be able to help with better advice, but I’d say get some experience there first.  I don’t think you’ll find an agent on either coast to represent you with 10 hours of classes.  Have you done anything else?  Plays?  Voice-overs?  What does your teacher say? Are TV commercials your only interest in the biz?  I suppose you know there’s a fairly significant SAG work stoppage going on now. Joe

In addition to Joe’s advice, Dallas, while not New York, LA, or even North Carolina, isn’t exactly a backwaters town with no commercial or advertising activity. You could conceivably make a heckuva a career there locally, and you’d have less competition. Carl ‘Wesistance is futiwe! Pwepawe to be assimiwated! I’m sure there are some local commercials that you can audition for. I wouldn’t relocate anywhere until you get more experience though. It’s a long hard shot even with a lot of experience. However, if you feel like moving anyway, and acting is only a small part of it, then by all means, do what you want. Just don’t move only for acting work. angie www.u4ia.org   Spoiled Rotten.
