Non Union Commercials

Question:

Before you automatically turn down what "seems" to be a SAG job, call the local office and find out if it was a job conceived under either a preexisting contract, or a contract negotiated in an interim agreement.  Those are the safe SAG jobs at this point.  At least according to our local president. If there is a casting notice for NON-UNION commercials, is it OK for a NON-Union person to go for the job at this strike time? Will this be scabbing?

First contact SAG/AFTRA to find out if this is commercial that if not for the strike would have been classified as a union gig. If that’s the case, then doing the job would be considered scabbing. Well, then, I screwed up yesterday and told the CD right off the bat that I wasn’t auditioning at all during the strike.  "Ok, fine," he said and hung up… Someone else pointed out that I should have accepted the audition and, if cast for a union position, called SAG and offered to drop the job for SAG admission. — Daniel Norton

Yeah, its tricky. I passed up an audition yesterday for a big national commercial, because eve though the CA told me it was non union, a little voice in the back of my head said "Well this mutli billion $ corp wouldn’t shot a non union commercial" so I called. And turned down the audition. I also turned down a an actual job a couple of days ago…one that in all likelihood would have qualified me….but where I am they’re not making exactly the same offer as in NY or LA.
