Double Standards for corporations?

Question:

Women & Elephants never forget. – Dorothy Parker

And dickheads who never understood what the truth was to begin with, always mis-quote, and do it out of context. bill — THE ACTING STUDIO http://gvtg.com/theactingstudio

Response:

Thankfully, I would not feel compromised. My choices would be very clear. I’d take their money of course. I’d still resent the hell out of them for the attack and probably wouldn’t buy their products until my anger & resentment wore off. If my character was required to do steamy love scenes with a gorgeous muscular hunk on a daily basis, …I might be inclined to forgive them a little faster.

So, then, I shouldn’t forward your post on to the head of PGP, huh? <g Carl — "Micro" "Soft" Why does that sound so Freudian to me? – CASalonen Before you buy.

I certainly hope you’ve classified me as a woman and *NOT* an elephant. Drama Queen — "Don’t f**ck with me fellas! This isn’t my first day at the rodeo. I’ve fought BIGGER sharks in Hollywood!"                                 –Joan Crawford (in "Mommie Dearest")

Response:

I wonder, too, if SAG members feel differently towards SAG member who scabbed and non-union members who took struck work. Any opinions?

Personally, I’d be a whole lot more lenient with non-union workers who took work than with union members who scabbed or even went financial core. Carl — "Micro" "Soft" Why does that sound so Freudian to me? – CASalonen Before you buy.

- Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I understand that SAG cannot advocate the continual boycott of P & G now that the strike has been settled, …but I for one will not be jumping to purchase their products anytime soon unless I can help it. I think if we are going to hold grudges against scabs, we shouldn’t be so quick to forgive the corporate whoremongers who hired them. Tough call, deeq…what would you do if PGP suddenly called you up and offered you a lead role on "As The World Turns"? Many people would find their principles in this compromised. Carl

The following is an opinion piece I read from another actors group. The poster asks a very reasonable and rational question? Opinions… Okay, this should start a debate….First of all thank god that for the most part – the strike is over. And this is due, in fact, to the solidarity of union and non-union actors working for the good of us all. When we got the press release about the terms of the strike, one thing that grabbed my attention was to stop the boycotts of P&G and any other companies that used scabs. Although I’m still holding a grudge, and am not readily jumping on their products or eating in their restaurants, that’s a personal decision for me. I’m not advocating that everyone else continue to boycott these union busters because SAG would not look good if this continued in an organized manner. However, I find it to be a nasty double standard when SAG says lay off the people who caused us these problems, but let’s discipline the actor’s who crossed the picket lines. Shouldn’t it be all or nothing? I know we can’t fine these corporations, but why punish our ‘own’ (used loosely) who were perhaps trying to pay their bills and let these big corporate sucks get off scott free?

Yeah, I have been thinking (and saying the same thing).  Sometimes it pays to just be the bigger person — forgive those who harmed you and move on. I wonder, too, if SAG members feel differently towards SAG member who scabbed and non-union members who took struck work. Any opinions?

In years past, a typical "punishment" for a union member who broke Rule #1 was a fine equivalent to the amount of income received and a period (several months) of suspension.  I’ve known a few brothers and sisters who went through the review process and they learned their lessons.  Break the rules and you will be caught. "Stay the course," otherwise union solidarity suffers. As "kinder and gentler" union would explore ways to include and re-educate union members who scabbed and non-union actors who did struck work. But strikes tend to generate negative emotional responses.  With the probability of another strike on the horizon, I suspect that many will prefer to make examples of this year’s scabs.
