To bleed or border? Headshots…
Question:
I disagree. I keep hearing that casting directors prefer ’shoulders only’ shots, but the 3/4 shots are the ones that get me the most calls. I think they can show more personality, if done well, as opposed to ‘the head in the box’ syndrome. Just my 2 cents ; )

Good advice Vandi- Personally I like the clean bordered look. As far as lithos go, My agent uses them with success and has no objection to them. I keep a very serious shot on Photo too. There is a company called Mass Photo down your way- in Houston. I get 100 photo repros for $51- tax shipping the whole deal. Email me if you like and I will fwd the info.
David: Thanks for the kind words. Thanks too for reminding me about Mass Photo. I use them too and they’ve always done excellent work at an excellent price. Vandi Share what you know. Learn what you don’t.

- Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hey Vandi! Whats up? The agent I just signed with didn’t seem to have a preference. She did mention that the 3/4 shots seem to be getting alot of attention. Thats why I ask my fellow actor friends what seems to be going well. I currently want to use up my old headshots which are shoulder up. I have a commercial smile shot…happy & big smile. I have a serious more dramatic look and a more suttle friendly look. I figure I can use them all in different situations. The border thing is what I have heard variable comments on. Thanks for the advice. Will consider it all seriously. Oh yeah…..thanks for being a good friend too!

Glad to know you’ve got a collection of shots. You’re right about being able to use them all in different situations. When I had my last ones done, the agent said bleed. But that’s probably changed as it does every few years. Drop me an e-mail! Vandi Share what you know. Learn what you don’t.

whoops…that blonde syndrome again. Hey what can I say? I just woke up. :-} – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – No, as I said, it was an 8×10 with 4 different looks on it. Thats not a bad price. What form did you have to send them in? Was this like the comp card size or an 8×10 sheet. (comp card has 3 on one side and one good color on photo on the other a little bigger than a 5×7. Will these be the post card comps? I just sent (husband is out the door with the order as we speak) my modeling photos to ABC in Springfield, MO. The price for the 8×10 composite with 4 different looks was $110 for 500. There is a company called Mass Photo down your way- in Houston. I get 100 photo repros for $51- tax shipping the whole deal. Email me if you like and I will fwd the info. Hey Dave. I used Mass photos the last time for my glossies. I was really happy aand they sent them back in 4 days. ABC photos will do 500 lithos for 80.00. Should I go with 100 glossies for 51 or 500 lithos for 80.00? Mary – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Mary: What does your agent say? Personally, I bleed at the moment. Have had both. The object of a head shot is to sell yourself. Let your agent look at the proof sheet before you get any made up. I remember one actor who "surprised" his (and mine at the time) agent with a new headshot. He’d picked himself and was rather proud of it. Only one "slight" problem. It looked like his nose was flattened out against a piece of glass and it was a waste of $. Go for a shot that is shoulders up. Your face should be the main focus. It should sell you. Vandi Hey guys, Have you heard enough on the headshot subject yet? I’m getting some new headshots printed. Question is….Should I bleed out or border them? I have heard that things and preferences have changed. What is the most respected current format or does it really matter? Also should I go with 3/4 shots or shoulders. My originals shots are just shoulder up Or I guess I could do some of both. Are lithographs really acceptable? Lots of questions…… Mary Share what you know. Learn what you don’t.
