Dexedrine & ritalin

Question:

Just out of curiosity – there’s been a lot of talk lately about splitting pills – does anyone know if Ritalin SR is scored?  20mg is just too much for him, but if we could split it, it might work better than the Dex Spansules. Brian Leyton MIS Manager, Commercial Petroleum Equipment

Hi Brian, I’m sure that you should never split any SR meds.  It would effect the way it was released into your system and you may get too much too fast. I could be very dangerous.  They should put a warning on the prescription bottle. Deb

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Sorry, I have the generic 20SRs and they are not scored.  I know this is a pain. I don’t know what the answer is.  My son is trying out the Wellbutrin, which seems to level out his moods, temper, impulsivity.  He seems happier.  But. still very fustrated with things that fustrate him, and still not willing to sit and try to tackle these things.  (M-A-T-H)  I wanted him to work on it over the summer so he would not be so far behind next week, and even offered to pay him a dollar a page.  NG. I installed mathblaster and he’s spending some time with that which is good. Anyway, the Wellbutrin is taken in the morning and after school, and I think we may get away with no dosing during the school day.  We’ll see.  I’m still not sold on the Wellbutrin since I still see problems.  Well I guess I should give it some more time, though since there are other improvements that are really significant. Cambela

I’ve heard that Wellbutrin may take a while before it really starts working, so give it a bit more time. As for the Ritalin, today’s the first day of school – we’ve decided to stick with regular Ritalin, give him 10mg at 7:30, 5 at 10:30 & 5 at 1:30. He’s out at 4:00, so while this schedule won’t carry him through homework time, I don’t expect much homework yet anyhow. Lately I have really noticed the difference between on/off Ritalin.  While before, the difference seemed much more subtle, lately I can tell it’s wearing off just by his attitude & how loud he is.  On the meds, he’s really keeping it together, and I just know that school’s going to be great for him.  He’s really excited, and strangely doesn’t seem too nervous (at least for him, the anxiety poster child). He’s also enjoying Reading Blaster 2000.  He was able to focus on it pretty well, even off the meds.  Other than bedtime (which is still a regularly scheduled disaster), things seem to be going really well. I can’t wait to get home & find out how his day went… Brian Leyton

I kind of assumed that, but wanted to make sure… Brian Leyton

ool day.  We’ll see.  I’m still not sold on the Cambela

<snip   Just remember that one day your son will read what you have written.   Grantland

Response:

My son is starting to tic, I swear, the past two days.  Not too bad, but will have to watch it.

Josh’s tics seem to have disappeared, but when he had them, they were greatly increased when he was feeling anxious.  Could just be the start of school… He’s on the wellbutrin.  I am thinking it may not be the right med for him but will keep it up until the next appt and then discuss my concerns with the doc.  He’s been so depressed, the one day I didn’t remember to leave it out for him he was Mr Depressive, crying about his "whole life".  I think he needs to see a therapist.  He decided not to see his father ever again, but he’s not happy with the decision. He’s not happy with seeing him either.  Must find therapist. Must give Wellbutrin. Must go to work. Must fix the car.  Must must must.  Mustard.   Can somebody, maybe GRANTLAND  make an ADD prayer/poemey thing for all the parents of the kids going back to school?  I need a mantra.

How about: Roses are Red Violets are Blue ADD is tough But we’ll somehow make it through Sorry, but that’s about the limit of my creativity… Brian Leyton

Also TS seems to come and go, it will probably come back sometime in the future. I hope that you are understanding for Josh’s sake. It’s just another way to release tension, so try not to make a huge issue out of it or he might start to feel bad about himself.

Well, his tics were: 1.  "Crotch pulling", which just caused people to ask if he has to go to the bathroom.  When he says no, they just assume he’s a regular guy who likes to "adjust himself" frequently. 2.  Licking his lips over & over until they were all red & chapped.  Makes people ask what he ate for breakfast that’s still all over his face, but otherwise not so bad. When this all started, the Psych. asked us if there was any family history of tics, and we said no, because we don’t remember any.  Then, months later, my sister mentioned that she used to kind of shrug one shoulder a lot when she was a kid.  Then, my mom said "oh, and your father used to blink a lot when he was tired". I was like, "thanks mom, wish I’d known this a few months ago…".  Not that it would have made much difference though. I guess that technically he does not have TS, because to be diagnosed as TS, I believe that you have to have at least 3 tics, and one of them has to be a vocal tic.  So far they haven’t come back, even with the stress of school starting, but we do keep an eye on him. Oh, and now I think *I’ve* developed a sympathy tic – I had a cold several months back, and now I can’t seem to stop this sniffing thing that I’ve been doing… Brian Leyton

My 6 1/2 YO son has been on Ritalin for about the last year (10mg, 5 & 5).  It is very short acting with him – maybe 3 hrs if we’re lucky.  In preparation for him beginning 1st grade in a couple of weeks, we want to find something that gives a longer effect.  First we thought about Ritalin SR, but it only comes in 20mg, which she says is really too much for him (it’s also almost impossible to find at any of the pharmacies around here). So the next idea is to try the Dex spansules, which come in 5mg.  The thing that got me though, is that she suggested we try 5mg Rit first thing in the morning, and then give him the Dex about the time he gets to school. Anyone know of any problems in mixing Ritalin & Dexedrine?  Any ideas of how long we can expect the Dex to last?  The other issues we are facing is that he developed a couple of tics when he first went on Ritalin, but they subsided after a few months.  He also has a history of anxiety.  We’re a bit worried about a possible increase in side-effects with Dex as opposed to Rit – that’s why we are probably going to start next week, before school starts. Any comments? Brian Leyton MIS Manager, Commercial Petroleum Equipment

Brian, Good luck! Our 10 year old has been taking Ritalin for the last 4 years. From day one it has been 20mg-20mg-20mg-10mg per day, 7:00, 10:00, 1:00 and 4:00. We tried the SR and were not happy with the results. While using the SR it appeared as if the medication Terry Carter
