Generation Gap in Today's Heavy Metal Scene?
Question:
– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I attended a show at a nightclub recently where the promoters featured two death metal/grindcore bands with two old school metal bands. This bill drew a curious mix of fans, with a lot of 20-something fans coming to see the death/grindcore bands as well as a lot of 30 something fans turning out to see the old schoolers. What became increasingly apparent as the night progressed was the generation gap that existed between the 20 somethings and the 30 somethings and the bands they had come to see. The crux of the split seems to be one of the attitude each group takes towards metal. The Old Schoolers take metal music very seriously, assigning an almost religious respect to it and it’s conventions. The younger generation doesn’t seem to take metal music very serious at all, acting almost as if it’s all a big joke. Are we starting to see a irrepairable schism among old school and new school metal fans? Will it become as big as the split between rockers and jazzers once was? Your comments? New bands don’t write songs about rocking, i.e. "All Men Play On Ten", "God Gave Rock ‘N’ Roll To You" etc. So, because the bands aren’t telling kids that they should worship heavy metal, the kids don’t.
