Question:

Well I figured since I wrote I would introduce myself.  I am Debbi, currently a stay at home foster parent.  Right now I have two children who are siblings, 3 (Ashley) and 1 (David), and another 3 year old (Robert). I can echo some of the frustrations i have read in here so far with DSS and the lack of humanity.  I have been licensed for three years and have had twenty-four children come through and leave.  This summer should have broken us of all want to do this as the teen we had almost a year decided to attempt to kill herself twice.  In the middle of this the other teen we had decided to start brawling at school.  Why we are still in it I do not know. I look forward to talking with you all. Debbi

Response:

Hi Debbie!  Welcome!! Yes, it takes some "die hards" to last a long time in the foster system.  Our licensing worker was here the other day and she said that most foster parents are out within 2 years — they either adopt out (as we seem to be doing even though we hadn’t planned on it) or burn out……sad, huh? I don’t really have any "positive words of encouragement" for you…..we are going thru a particularly tough time with ALL of our foster children right now (one CP and RAD; one RAD/ADHD/ODD and getting NO help for him even though we are begging!; one sexually abused girl acting out in nonsexual ways yet still DEMANDING tons of attention, particularly at school; and one suicidally depressed teen trying to go thru TPR stuff AND get back on the list for a liver transplant…..in addition to 3 bio kids, including 1 special needs child there too…..)  Some days are better than others….we’re just holding in there hoping for one of those better ones to show up soon!!!  But, lately, I can surely relate to why many foster parents burn out!!!!! Anyway, welcome to the group!
