IBS and Metamucil/Citrecel

Question:

Hi Everyone, I’m fairly new to posting so I’m not really sure this will even post but my question has to do with using the so called natural fiber laxatives such as Metamucil and Citrecel.  I was wondering what other people’s experience was with using these such as do they work, do you take them every day, how much do you take, have you ever had a reaction to either one of them and how could you tell?  My doc tells me to take it every single night of my life maybe for the rest of my life. I can’t believe this is good for you and I’ve read that Metamucil interferes with absorption of some minerals such as calcium or magnesium (not sure).  Yes they do work for me but sometimes I think maybe they cause me to have excess cramping and excess BM’s if you know what I mean.  But I don’t know how to tell if it’s just my IBS acting up or what and I wanted some feedback from others. ——————-==== Posted via Deja News ====———————–       http://www.dejanews.com/     Search, Read, Post to Usenet

If you go to your local health food store, they have psyllium husk in bulk and it’s very cheap. Mix in in with fruit juice and voila, all the benefits and none of the cost! It’s a little gritty, which may turn some people off, but if you just gulp a glass down, I doubt if you’ll mind it too much. You wallet will thank you.

The GE I have been seeing has told me a story from his med school days.  He remembers his prof’s preaching about high fiber diets, Metamucil, oats, grain….. for patients with IBS.  He thought, great, I’ll try it too (if it’s good for sick people, must be good for healthy ones too?).  He then wondered if he had IBS with all the symptoms, gas and D that he experienced.  Bottom line from this guy – if a high fiber diet (including Metamucil type stuff) works for you, great, but it certainly won’t work for everyone and that’s fine.  He told me that noone can tell you what will work except yourself.  He’s right, IBS is so different and yet the same with every patient. You’ll know if it is good for you soon enough. Personally, I found Metamucil to be a bit too much.  I’ve had luck eating oatmeal with my breakfast and often a can of Boost (has fiber). It seems to be just enough without aggravation.  But then, that’s just me!
