Is it wrong?

Question:

Is it wrong to be a member of a news list for political activism when you just do the exact opposite of what the group tells you to do?  (Like when they say to write in support of the M$ anti-trust case, you write to support the people who are still opposed to settling the case.)

There is always a risk when you join a group like this that the agenda of the group will expand or continue over time well beyond the original scope of the group. And many of the group members will assume that because you supported their position at one time that you will always be willing to support their position. (Discovered this many years ago when civil rights activists started taking Vietnam War positions – two very different things in my mind). I believe it is important to be true to yourself, your own beliefs. Depending on how important you consider this group to be, you might want to challenge their decisions. And by the way, I think you are absolutely right about the Microsoft settlement. They are already excluding use of the Netscape browser by deliberately not fixing bugs in their software and by not following standards. What a joke their settlement proposal is. Stan- who is suspicious and cautious about joining political and religious groups that assume you will always go along with them. Stan- who is frustrated by Microsoft. As you wish. I don’t think it’s helpful to think of things in terms of being "wrong" or "right". You have to do what you have to do at any particular time and cope as best you can. That’s hard enough without a handful of guilt added to the mixing bowl. I don’t like groups that tell me what to do; freedom of conscience is an inalienable human right. But if a group you have been part of now no longer see eye-to-eye maybe it’s time to move on. Bri — Dum spiro, spero.

What would be wrong would be to support or oppose something that you feel should be opposed or supported.

Is it wrong to hate someone that doesn’t like you? Is it wrong to go and hurt them? I say no.

YOU SAY NO.  HOW CAN YOU SAY NO YOU DON’T THINK IT’S WRONG.   IT’S QUITE OBVIOUS THAT YOU ARE QUESTIONING YOUR OWN OPINION BYE ASKING THE QUESTION TO BEGIN WITH. IT’S WRONG TO HATE ANYONE!!  YOU SIMPLY DISLIKE THEIR WAYS AND THERE CHARACTER.   YOU CERTAINLY SHOULD’T RESULT TO VIOLENCE SIMPLY BECAUSE YOU DISLIKE SOMEONE.  THERE ARE LOT’S OF PEOPLE WITH WHOM I HAVE PROBLEMS WITH THEIR VIEWS, CHARACTER TRAITS AND OPINIONS BUT I CERTAINLY WOULD’T RESULT TO PHYSICAL HARM. IF YOU CAN NOT EXPRESS YOURSELF VOCALLY, RATIONALLY AND INTELLIGENTLY ENOUGH TO GET YOUR POINT ACCROSS THEN MAYBE YOU SHOULD RETHINK YOUR OWN OPINIONS. DIDN’T YOUR MOTHER TEACH YOU ALL OF THAT.  IT’S BASIC PRE-SCHOOL RULES IF SOMEONE DOESN’T LIKE YOU AND YOU IN TURN DO NOT LIKE THEM, STAY AWAY FROM THEM. IF THEY CAUSE YOU PHYSICAL HARM THEN YOU NEED TO TAKE THE APPROPRIATE CIVILIZED AND LEGAL RECOURSE.  RETRIBUTION IS ONLY GOING TO BEGAT MORE VIOLENCE.  THIS IS WHAT’S WRONG WITH THE WORLD TODAY. Gosh, Jam, that’s a pretty general question. I don’t think it right to hurt someone just because they don’t like you. Is there more to all this? What’s going on? Julia –"This wasn’t in the brouchure."–Billy Crystal
