NC School of the Arts?
Question:
Izzy, I went to NCSA for my senior year of High School and I feel it was the best thing I ever did. Yes, the program is hard but, it prepares you for the acting world. It has the same problems as any college(some snotty people, bad influences, tons of parties). But, for me, I found out lots about myself and my craft there(I was in the voice program). The teachers and their experience are phenominal. Please, if you have any more questions or want to know anything else feel free to ask! Yours, Leah "To thine own self be true"-Polonius from Hamlet
Response:
Izzy, I live right up the street from NCSA. I’ve heard it’s very good, and getting better. A close friend of mine just graduated from the school of film making there. He raves about it. I guess the two little known facts about the school is this: 1. If you go to the acting school, don’t expect to get in the student films from the film making school. For some reason they insist they use actors from the community for their films, not students. I don’t know why. 2. According to my friend, the acting school tries to get rid of whatever "natural" talent you have. I don’t know exactly what he meant by that. Maybe that’s a good thing or bad thing, but I’d look into it. Good luck to you! Mike
Response:
Thanks everyone! that thing about destroying natural talent kind of scares me (Ack!) but other than that, I’m excited! Additional info from anyone is still greatly appreciated! "Yes, that is my real name" – Izzy Burger
Response:
All I’ve ever heard about NC is great stuff. Don’t get nervous about that "destroying natural talent" bit; I imagine they mean stripping away whatever acting tricks and tics that’ve worked for you up till now so you can build a strong technique from the ground up. Enjoy!
Response:
MANDRLAW, Is that always a good thing though? Taking away what natural talent we have? The only reason I mention it is because of a thread over at ACTING-PRO. Several professionals have been discussing how after reading one chapter of KS, it changed the way they approached a character, emotion, scene, whatever, where they wouldn’t have had problems before and it could be very frustrating. I found it really interesting. But to Izzy, yes. Go for the School. It is top notch. What do others think about this? -M.

No, no…not taking away one’s natural talent, but the "crutches" we tend to develop to get by, and be "comfortable" on stage. I always use a sports analogy. If you’ve never had a golf lesson, you might flail away on your own and become pretty OK. But you can only get so far with it. Once you start taking lessons, that pro is gonna break down the mechanics of your swing to its basics — and your game IS gonna suck for a while, because you’ll be all self-conscious about it. But once the mechanics of a real technique are ingrained in you — so ingrained that you don’t have to think about it — you’re capable of greater things than you were before.

Hellooooo Everyone. There’s a very good chance that I will have an opportunity to attend the NC School of the Arts next year. I was just wondering – has anyone here GONE to NCSA? Feedback? If I am making a horrible mistake, PLEASE tell me
NCSA’s one of the best schools in the country. They have very high standards, so getting in is a minor feat. Go! — TO REPLY: xjahn AT bellsouth DOT net }:-) Christopher Jahn
