Why not?  They are a statistical danger to society? Regardless, smoking is illegal.

Response:

Cigarette smoke costs far more in health costs than most things. If it didn’t have such a strong odor, I would be indifferent to it.  How would you react if someone sprayed you with a strong perfume without your desire?

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – But anything done to excess is potentially self destructive. The smoking industry targets the poor with advertisement. I disagree that the smoking industry targets the poor.  I believe they do target the young but other than that they are an equal opportunity addiction.  I have no sympathy for poor ppl who continue to smoke and can’t afford it. They do target the young, yes, but have you ever looked around in the lower east side of Manhattan at the signage? Perhaps if you were in the situation of many poor people in this country you’d understand that sometimes doing unhealthy things is a way of life. When you are afforded few luxuries and happy moments, you tend to find them in simple places. To many, smoking is a pleasurable activity and when you don’t find too many pleasures, you tend to go with cheap ones. I do feel bad for the poor in this country who are targeted by the smoking industry. Thing is, people have an inclination towards fascism when left unchecked. This original poster is an idiot. I’m sure he/she does oodles of unhealthy things, even something as simple as sitting in front of a computer all day, but because that’s not something the poster opposes, it’s okay. I don’t think taxing things such as cigarettes and booze as being like fascism.  The impact both have on society has been well documented and the our health system is already burdened. The original poster seemed to think levying a huge tax on smoking was a grand idea, because he/she didn’t like it. I’m certain I could find something either of you do that I find repulsive, but it’s not my place to levy a burdensome tax on it just because I disagree. Thing is, we tax certain things as we demonize them. We don’t, however, tax other dangerous things, because too many people like them and they haven’t been demonized yet. Our health system is affected by more than smoking and booze. But we don’t stop those activities. Instead of taxing the life out of users (and their culpability for use is a while other ballgame) we should make more pro-active changes in the way that campaigns to make people smoke, drink, whatever to stop the root cause. We’re great, in this country, at harassing the victims, them accepting hypocritical funding from these horrible companies behind the veil of secrecy. The poster opposes smoking because he/she doesn’t do it. I don’t drink. But I would never suggest alcohol be made illegal or people who drive drunk, for example, should have all their assets seized and be sent to the poor house. I don’t think smoking or alcohol should be made illegal but I don’t have a problem with taxing either.   As far as I understood our drunk driving laws is that one does not have their assests seized and than sent to the poor house at the first offense.  If it’s gotten to that point the person is a chronic offender and needs something rash to be done to them.  I know someone who worked in a legal office and the lawyer there had a client who was an alcoholic.  This person got in alcohol related trouble so many times that they finally put her in jail.  The lawyer even supported it as it being the only alternative at that point…they had tried everything else. My point is simple. He/She suggested an astronomical tax. I suggested something equally as bizarre. I used to smoke, don’t do it anymore, and get sick and tired of the anit-smoking brigrade. Even more, I’m sick to death of the hypocrisy of these anti-anything movements. When they stop driving, uding refridgeration, breathing, throwing away trash, using anything, defecating, building homes, using air conditioning or heat, buying pre-made food products, wearing clothing they bought in a store, then I’ll listen. Til then, they cause as much as harm as the next guy. darkness, laughter and light, True — Whenever there are great virtues, it’s a sure sign something’s wrong. – Brecht
