I got this same feeling from our local school – they’ve been great. It is sad that this is such an uncommon thing. -Chris Eliot – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – [And all cut.] That’s great! The feeling that there is finally some help is such a relief. E. Penrose E. Penrose

Weird place. They have their summer vacation in the middle of the winter. Mark Probert A vote for Pat Buchanan is a vote for America’s First Fuhrer!

Yeah, I know, and we go swimming on Christmas Day! But somehow, I LIKE having a nice long vacation in which to prepare and recover from Christmas and New Year. And the kids have 5 weeks of summer holidays after Christmas to play with and demolish their christmas presents before having to go back to school. :) LJ

I have always liked Australians. I met some in Vietnam, and partied with two (the US equivalent of two fraternities at a college) Australian Army types in Singapore. I call Australians, The Most Fun People on Earth." Mark Probert A vote for Pat Buchanan is a vote for America’s First Fuhrer!

Good morning all We’ve just made our first foray into the education system with regards to ADHD, and I’m absolutely overwhelmed! Bit of background: My 6 yr old finished year 1 last December, with the teachers suggesting ‘have you thought of having him tested for ADHD?’. Well, we had thought about it, and with that prompting, we got on with it. It was a bit tedious going from GP to psychologist, back to GP, referred to paed., finally getting consensus, and a prescription for dexamphetamine last Friday. (As you may have noticed, we’re in Australia. Only two drugs available – Dexamphetamine on the subsidised list at $16 per 100 tabs, and Ritalin not subsidised at $60 per bottle. Not a hard decision to try the dexamphetamine first!) Haven’t had much time to play with dosage, before our school year started on Monday… so not much feedback there yet. Anyway, on Wednesday, we had a meeting with the Deputy Principal and class teacher. We took in all the psych reports etc, and explained what we had done over the holidays. WOW. Comments from the D/principal included ‘great to see you got onto the problem so soon, often it gets left to year 2 or 3 when the kid’s really struggling’ ‘I’ll pick him up from the classroom this week, and show him the other kids having their lunchtime meds, so he’ll feel better about it – seeing the other kids doing it, and he’ll know what to do next week when you start twice a day meds’ ‘I did my post-grad study on ADHD’ The new classroom teacher had gone to the Deputy principal the day before (after only 2 days of school) and listed 3 kids who she thought would need help. Our boy was on the list, and she hadn’t known his previous history at all. Nice to know she noticed and was acting on what she saw! She didn’t seem to know all that much about ADHD, but the d/principal was filling her in. They’d already organised the teacher aide’s from last year to work with the same kids again. That was great, and we went off home feeling good. That afternoon, after school pick-up and we were walking home, my ADDlet (love that term, may I borrow it?) was running ahead, waving a big stick picked up along the way, and almost ran into a woman walking ahead. I yelled out ‘R, put down the stick please’ and the woman turned around and said ‘R? I was just reading a report on him. I’m the guidance counselor’ and she stopped for a chat. Invited me to pop in today and check out her computer resources, and for further chat. Geez, this woman was at her car door going home, and stopped at the sound of his name to offer help! And we’d only given the reports to the D/principal at 8:30 that morning! After 6 years of parenting without help, and not even really knowing the problem, all of a sudden, there seems to be help everywhere! Thanks for reading. Just wanted to share a feel good story.
