Realities of the Entertainment Business

Hi Everyone, I’m a college student currently writing a term paper on the entertainment business and the realities of it. I have a list of questions that I’m asking and would love anyone on this newsgroup to take part if interested. Please need to get these back by December 10th and write the paper next weekend. Name: Juliet Age: 26 Occupation: Actress, voiceover artist, improver, comedianne, singer, writer, dancer What has your education been and what kind of professional training have you had? BFA from NYU, 5 years a Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute When was the first time you knew that you wanted to be involved in entertainment? Day my mom cut the mike off our new fangled hi fi stereo system. I was two. In what capacity did you want to be involved? An actor/actresses, dancer, singer, etc. See occupation What are you doing now? lead in musical, 2 improv groups (Guilty Children and Pocket Full of Tales) Sketch group random carnival, teach acting, voiceovers for industrial videos, lead in an indie film and stand up about once a month. Plus I work full time and freelance for a magazine. If you had to do it all over again would you do the same? yeppers. What has been your highest point in the business? The day I realized (16 during a monologue in high school) I was actually pretty good at acting. That a my first review which was also my first really good review. What has been your lowest? Oh dear…..every part I desperately want but don’t get. What are you the most proud of? My sketch group What are you the least proud of? none of it…learned from everything. Even those awful student films. What about the business do you like? The freedom to do what I want, to express myself…..acting in general What about the business do you dislike? Trying to be forced into being a cradboard cutout Do you have any horror stories that you would like to share? none that I’d share What advice would you give someone who was trying to break into your profession right now? no you don’t…if you want proper research you want each individual to send you a private response that will be seen only by yourself…stuff that is filled in to be seen publicly will be potentially inaccurate since we will be tempted to alter our answers to impress others eric "the alternative to seeing things in black and white is to see them in full colour"

LIfe was weird, but has gotten MUCH better: They have the little Asshole in custody. although it looks like he did some damage when he hit me. Singing has become a problem, so I am still having fun at the doctor’s. and New Year’s was a blast. slept all day Saturday as I had threatened; AND I may have another directing project with ShockTroupe, although they want me onstage more. and a staged reading I did went quite well. I may be doing it again in Jersey in March. Now as to the horror story: my father sent my FIRST contact sheet to me. YIPE! Platforms, a too tight t-shirt and bell bottoms…. My cousins bar-Mitzvah… ## ## ##In what capacity did you want to be involved? An actor/actresses, dancer, singer, etc. All until an accident took me out of some of the riskier things like wire Walking and acrobatics. ## ## ##What are you doing now? A staged reading of a new play and moonlighting as a temp. ## ## ##If you had to do it all over again would you do the same? YES!!!! ## ## ##What has been your highest point in the business? Working with Kermit the Frog ## ## ##What has been your lowest? Stage Managing a musical titled ‘Moses, My Love and doing a staged reading of a play where a famous producer informed the director that he should apologize to us for "making us read this crap" – it took it off the resume in case I audition for him; ## ## ##What are you the most proud of? the review I received for my NY directing debut. ## ## ##What are you the least proud of? The BoomTown Players, a now defunct (mercifully) improv group ## ## ##What about the business do you like? The people I have met for the most part. ## ## ##What about the business do you dislike? The fact that most people outside the business seem to think the word ‘actor’ means "sucker’…the idea that acting is the only profession where being scammed is ‘ok’ ## ##Do you have any horror stories that you would like to share? several. want them all? ## ##What advice would you give someone who was trying to break into your profession right now? Get a college education. It doesn’t matter what major, just graduate. the Late Israel Regardie, an occult scholar stated that anyone delving into the occult arts should have been through therapy – the idea being that the baggage would be lightened. I feel that college should be a time to lose one’s baggage. and that the theater is not a substitute for therapy of ANY sort. Acting should be approached with respect. and the realization that hard work is necessary to succeed.
