USS GREENVILLE sinks Japanese Fishing boat
Question:
Isn’t it interesting that it was a Japansese ship sunk by the US not far from Pearl Harbor? Hmmm. Of course, I know it was an accident, but still…

Any loss of life in any accident regardless of politics is regretable. I would not wish that on anyone. 63 days to go..

Ain’t it interesting when the Socialist element comes out and tries to rewrite history
It is a damn shame that we had an *ACCIDENT*. Now we have those here that think we ought to dismantle the military and that the best do not go into the service. I do beg to differ. Many like myself served as a service to my country, to protect it from enemies foreign and domestic. We served ungrateful pukes like you who idolize other socialists like Clinton, Gore and there ilk. We had songs about "4 dead in Ohio". What about the 90 or so in Waco that another socialist managed to exterminate. That’s ok isn’t it. I’m called a "right winger"..hardly…I’m a patriot. I would serve my country proudly again…..with honor, just like my father in W.W.II. In viet nam we had people like Hanoi Jane aiding the enemy and causing the deaths of POWs, Bill (don’t bogart that joint) Clinton on foreign soil protesting his country. One is adored for her films, the other made it to the white house and made it in the white house…..watt a contree eh? Hypocrites! You want all of the good things this country stands for and refuse to see without the blood of thousands, you would not be free to post on the internet, go to church, or have your play toys in which to float about. Remember that for every freedom you have, a soldier, airman, or sailor gave up his life.

You poor simple ignoramus. What socialist element? When you rant and rave about the poor downtrodden military and the naughty unpatriotic Liberals consider the following. CHARACTER MATTERS The Democratic leadership in the House and Senate: House Minority Leader Richard Gephardt – Served his country in uniform, 1965-71 House Minority Whip David Bonior – Served his country in uniform, 1968-72 Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle – Served his country in uniform, 1969-72 Former Vice-President Albert Gore – Served his country in uniform, 1969-71 The Republican leadership in the House and Senate: Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich – avoided the draft, did not serve. Majority Leader Dick Armey- avoided the draft, did not serve. Majority Whip Tom Delay – avoided the draft, did not serve. Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott – avoided the draft, did not serve. THE CHICKENHAWKS There were many dishonest hypocritical, cowardly right-wing loonies who supported the war while refusing to personally participate. Here are just a few: Elliott Abrams – Sought deferment for bad back. Richard Armey – Sought college deferment, too smart to die. Bill Bennett – Sought graduate school deferment, too smart to die. Pat Buchanan – Sought deferment for bad knee. George W. Bush – AWOL Dick Cheney – Sought graduate school deferment, too smart to die. Tom DeLay – - Sought college deferment, too smart to die. Rush Limbaugh – Sought deferment for ingrown hair follicle on his ass. Trent Lott – Sought deferment, didn’t want to muss his hair. P.J. O’Rourke – Sought deferment, too stoned. Dan Quayle – Family got him into the Reserves. Pat Robertson – Father pulled him out of Korea as soon as the shooting began. Kenneth Starr – Sought deferment for psoriasis. - Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I suspect, by the way, that the military is lying about the extent of the damage to the sub. There may well be casualties on board in some compartments. When they ascend, they isolate the compartments, but it is quite possible that the hull has been punctured. On the UK news they have been showing what appear to be current shots of the sub. There are what appear to be paint marks on part of the rear section, but no sign of any damage to the vessel. Apparently the sub has been helping in the rescue effort so the chances of any casualties in its crew is highly unlikely.
They surface through the polar ice cap. I doubt a fishing boat would do serious damage.

Rather OT, but I don’t believe that the 688 class have that particular capability (at least, they don’t have rotatable planes on the fin).
Response:
However, this whole thing begs another question. What was a Japanese fishing boat doing in our waters? Based on what the Chicago Tribune wrote today, they were just nine miles off the coast, let alone outside our economic exclusion zone.
Right. It should have been sunk before it reached our waters. What we can’t tolerate are kamikaze Japanese school kids. Regards, John Phillips To respond by e-mail, please remove the parentheses from my address

I must apologize for losing my temper, however I am not ignorant, nor did my original post have anything to do with draft dodgers. The VN war was a travesty. The liberal left got us into it, kept us there, while the likes of socialists like Jane and Bill were traitors to the brave men who through no fault of their own in many cases had to serve. Nixon had it handed to him with the presidency but he got us out, no thanks to the left. As I said I am proud to have served my country, and I resent the crap I am reading here. Do away with our military and see how long it takes for some of the other lesser powers to try and take what we’ve got…..freedom. Now if that makes me ignorant than those who want to see our military further weakened are simply foolish.

The liberal left got us into Vietnam? We started getting into Vietnam under Eisenhower. Neither he, nor Kennedy who followed, were liberals. kept us there, while the likes of socialists like Jane and Bill were traitors to the brave men who through no fault of their own in many cases had to serve.

Too bad. Greeneville was a 688i attack boat. Apparently the boat was performing an emergency surface either for maintenance or training when the Greeneville hit the Jap. ship which sank in five minutes. Nine presumed dead. It’s a damn shame. Should NOT have happened. I heard she scraped her stern planes/rudder. We’ve already apologized, and we’ll owe the Japanese people some money. I’m waiting with dread for that fuckhead "A. Melon" to come and ruin Toppan’s newsgroup with his ceaseless drivel about "coverup"….
"A. Melon" is an anonymizing remailer. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I wonder what Eugene Fluckey thinks of all this… What type of sub is Greenville? Boomer or Attack? Any word on how damaged she is? Just wondering. Chris K-129
Response:
If the Greenville was doing an exercise, why the hell did she not know that trawler was up there. Sonar and passive listening would have easily pinpointed a trawler on the surface.
Only if the ship had its engines running, or its sonar enabled or if there were other audible signatures. The theory is that none of the above were necessarily going on. Also, the ability to analyze that which is directly on top of you is tricky. What the heck was the Captain thinking?? You don’t do an emergency exercise with a civilian vessel sitting there. Sounds like Court-martial time to me. (Unless, there was a legitimate on board emergency that dictated a real emergency surface.)
A similar accident happened in Japan in 1988, except it was a Japanese sub hitting a Japanese fishing boat. Response:
I doubt it. First the subs are designed for greater than a 1000 psi on the hull. They are designed to survive depth charge attacks. They are big ships. Even the attack boats. I understand they hit the fishing boat with the stern of the sub. So there is a very strong structure in this area because of the Reactors and support the driving of a ship with out the propellers torque the boat. There will most likely be at least one opening for a new sub driver. Bill

FWIW: "Retired Navy Capt. Alec Fraser told CNN that the protocol for bringing a submarine to the surface is typically strictly followed. The submarine first searches the waters in front of the vessel by sonar, Fraser said, and then it alters course so that the propellers don’t disrupt an acoustic search of the area behind it. If all appears clear, the vessel rises to periscope depth — about 20 to 30 feet below the surface — and the waters are surveyed visually to ensure they are clear, he said. Only then does it rise to the surface, he said." — Mac.
