Wellbutrin-update
Question:
Hi all. I posted earlier this week my concerns about my son starting his 3rd medication since December. He was prescribed Wellbutrin this time. Well, I am relieved to tell you that it seems to be working wonderfully. He has had NO anger outbursts (he still gets a little mouthy but sheesh, I can LIVE with this…after all, he is 6). He has done better in school, so far. He eats and sleeps well. And he is back to being a sweet little kid. I am keeping my fingers crossed. He was suffering so much from the Ritalin and dex making him aggressive and was having major problems in school. After reading your posts, I have also come to see that this school is not the one for him and I have contacted our local "Special School" district to have him evaluated for next school year. Since he is already reading at the 3rd grade level, I would like to find someplace for him to be able to take accelerated classes, yet have a way to deal with his behavioral problems. Our closest public grade school is awful but I am in the fortunate position of having to move (ick but it really is a blessing) this summer, so I can chose his school district carefully. Thankfully, we live in a large metropolitan area and have lots of school districts to choose from. I would like to thank all of you who have posted. Thanks for the help. I have been reading the posts for months, trying to convince myself that ADD wasn’t my son’s problem, but have come to terms with it. I attribute this to your postings, arguing and all!!
Thanks again Tazzles

He started the meds on 2/16. He took 75 mg twice per day. On 2/20, he began taking 75 mg 3 times per day. On 2/21, the evil twin took over again. He was acting exactly like he was on NO medication. Actually, he was worse. He got 3 notes home from school this week, was sent to bed early 2 days because he was so obnoxious to be around AND he bit me twice! ARGHHHHHHH… I know it can take several weeks for medication to kick in and I don’t want to stop this medication prematurely. He was on dex for 3 1/2 weeks and Ritalin for only one week before I KNEW those meds were not for him (increased his aggression 100%). At this point, I don’t know what to do. The school is complaining, we are exhausted, and the poor kid is in trouble from the minute he gets home from school until he goes to bed. I have the video 123 Magic and have found a great website for ODD as well as ADD. Thank God he is at his father’s this weekend. We needed a break from each other desperately. — Tazzles

I hope that you are keeping his doctor updated with how your son is responding. It would be a shame to get all frustrated after a couple weeks, then find out from the doctor that maybe there was some adjustment that may have helped. We spent most of a year trying to get the right medications and dosages for my son who also was 6 at the time. My son now is 9 years old. We finally settled on Ritalin to help him focus on school work and Buspar which seems to help with his ODD. It’s not uncommon to have a combination of drugs turn out to work the best. It just takes time and good communication with his doctor and teachers to monitor the results. BTW, you should keep in mind that drugs are not the whole magic solution. We have spent the last two years in family counseling trying to become better at dealing with his problems. Without that support, his problems could have developed into other problems with my wife’s relationship with me, as well as our younger son (who is not ADD). The whole family needs help with your son’s ADD, not just your son. Good luck, Jim
