Actors As Game Show Contestants

Question:

"Geri The Writer" wrote… I have, however, appeared as a guest on the NBC talkshow, "The Other Side."

Hi Geri~ How was your appearance as a guest on "The Other Side"? I appeared in one of their AFTRA reenactment "roll-ins" segments to illustrating a the guest’s story. It was a bitter disappointment that I didn’t get a contract from my work since they didn’t use my audio dialogue track. I  also sat in the audience later. I thought the show was a little phony because of their high dependency on a paid audience, and reenactment actors. It was very fun though. A.G.

How was your appearance as a guest on "The Other Side"?

I had a great time and met several very interesting people.  I wound up miking myself, however, because I didn’t like the sound tech’s placement of my lavalier (would’ve created a brushing sound against my hair and clothing and the wire was visible); and, I asked for an earphone because only one of the camera’s lights was working, so I wanted to hear the director.  I was part of a panel discussing spiritual and metaphysical issues related to having/wanting and not having/not wanting children. As I wasn’t up until the second half of the show, I bided my time backstage at and on the sidelines of "The Tonight Show."  Leno and I have seen each other on several other occasions; so, neither he nor his staff had any problem with me hanging around until it was my time to go on next door.  Also, I knew one of Leno’s guests, although we did not expect to see each other that day. There were no reenactments staged nor footage rolled during my appearance; and, the audience seemed to be comprised primarily of tourists.  It would not surprise me if they were spillover from "The Tonight Show" audience. No geri. Go play with fire. keep playing with the monster. That’s a game show, like the "The Most Dangerous Game". – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -Dear Group, I was wondering if any of you have appeared as a contestant on a game show and what your thoughts on this are.  Also, if you have, what advice do you have for actors considering it and/or doing it. I have seen footage of, primarily, old Chuck Barris Productions, such as "The Gong Show" and "The Dating Game," featuring actors before or in the early stages of their careers.  In fact, if I’m not mistaken, I believe that I was in the studio audience when Paul Reubens appeared as half of a comedy duo on "The Gong Show."  It was so long ago, however, I don’t recall precisely what he did or what the act was called.  Someone "& Fred," I think. I have not appeared on a gameshow; but, years ago, I auditioned for "Match Game."  That was fun.  I have, however, appeared as a guest on the NBC talkshow, "The Other Side." Looking forward to your replies, Geri

Years ago I was on the "new" Gong show (the one with Don Bleu) over 15 times and it was an AFTRA gig so I was paid pretty well and got my medical for a couple of years.  The only thing I list on my resume is when I co-hosted it as a character and I NEVER include any footage on my reel.  Most of the actors I know who have done game shows just do it for the money (if it’s a competition where you win money, it’s not AFTRA but AFTRA talent can appear on it as contestants).  You can win some cash, but don’t think you’re going to be discovered.  IMO Brad Slaight

I agree with Brad, do it for the money. BTW Brad I’ve been meaning to ask you. Are you a segment producer on FF?

Response:

Dear Group, I was wondering if any of you have appeared as a contestant on a game show and what your thoughts on this are. Geri

In the early 70s NYC  cting bulletin boards were full of notices for tv game shows.  In that era,  game show producers liked actors who had a little flair for the "dramatic" and also knew answers to questions like "Who said, ‘Let them eat cake’."  –  and also knew that you can’t exceed the the speed of light which is approximately xxx, xxxx miles per second. An actor I trained qualified for "The $20,000 Pyramid."  In the early 1970s, $20,000 was a lot or money.  The guy won the top award.   Imagine an actor who wins such an award and then donates the full amount to the not-for-profit theatre company with which he was affiliated.    The theatre was The Collonades Theatre Lab, run by Michael Lessac, son of Arthur Lessac.  Nobody knows what became of the actor. Hmmmm….. maybe we need the advice of Jerri…. what was her name, the wanna-be actress who became the most despised participant in Survivor II?  Maybe she has some ideas about being an actor and getting your 15 minutes of fame.
