Constantin Stanislavski

Question:

Have you read the rest in his series? He’s an interesting practitioner i feel and i agree, he provides a firm foundation for all actors. If you likes that you might like to try Building A Character and Creating A Role, his other two books in that line. regards, ‘ness –x–

Response:

An interesting read, but not the bible as some actors think.  Some of it was quite boring in fact.  So rather like the bible after all . . . Kerpow! Damn, here comes that lightning rod again . . .

I used to think to be a great actor, I had to show off or ham with effect, then I thought less is more, like Maurice Micklewhite keeps profusing. But Constantin aka Torstov aka the student, is the works. If you wanna be a real Method actor that would put Bobby Milk or that famed 50s actor from French parentage in Kansas to shame…read AAP. It is a grand book, S., the first of the trilogy that includes Building as Character and Creating a Role. And you can’t get a sense of what KS was reaching for until you’ve read all three.  And Ironically, 8 years before his passage, KS disassociated from many of his earlier writings to focus on a process called the Method of Physical Activities.  (Bobby Lewis writes about that evolution in Method or Madness and Advice to the Players.) The real reason that I’me writing is to correct your assumption that An Actor Prepares has anything to do with what is commonly known in the USA as "the method."  Lee Strasberg got stuck on memory of emotion and separated from the Group Theatre (which was studying the Stanislavski System in the 30s) and took over The Actors Studio in ‘47 with the intent of developing his "method."   In effect, there are followers of the Stanislavski System, or purists (like myself) who evolve with Stanislavski’s Method of Physical Activities, and then there are those who subscribe to Straberg’s "The Method."  And they’re very different in theory and application.
