Do you have to be American to join SAG
Question:
SAG accepts actors from any country who qualify and have at the very least, a green card. A friend, David Suchet, has shot many films in the US, and he sometimes grumbles about how difficult it is to process all the paper work. But he manages it, somehow.
This is exactly right. I don’t know what country David Suchet is from (somewhere in the Middle East considering his fluidity in Arabic) but he was just in the American film "A Perfect Murder," and also appears in the television series "Poirot." Is "Poirot" filmed in the US? I was sure that it is filmed in Canada, how do acting restrictions affect Canada. For example, I know that "The X-Files" is regularly filmed there… Thanks, Mike *Theatre is Life* *Film is Art* *Television is Furniture**

Is the union SAG that you talk of primarily for American actors or can British actors (like me) join it? Thanks, Jeremy

THere is a web site, http://www.sag.com The only reason to join a union is if they are negotiationg contracts for your area. I don’t know if SAG would be helpful in the UK. I’m sure there is something similar in the UK, I know they have their own Actor’s Equity, which is for the theatre over here. — ** NOTE: address is spamblocked – }:-) Christopher Jahn

Response:
Well, presumably British actors can join it, because I was reading Michael Caine’s autobiography and his wife, Shakira, became almost deadly ill right when they’d moved to Hollywood, and they got her into the hospital in the nick of time. Caine was distressed about the "insurance" stuff, because he’d not faced a similar situation in Britain and hadn’t personally set up any yet. A hospital employee said something like "Hey, aren’t you an actor?" and then informed him that they were covered by his SAG membership.
Couldn’t Michael Caine’s situation simply be something to the effect of a ‘family insurance policy’, though? Thanks, Mike *Theatre is Life* *Film is Art* *Television is Furniture**
