Headshot Lithos vs. Photos
Question:
My photographer tells me that casting agents and agents prefer photos
overlithos. However, lithos are much cheaper to have made and I see ads for them everywhere; so, actors must be using them. Apart from the screen posing a problem with making reproductions directly from lithos, are there any other disadvantages? Is it true that photos on RC paper are preferred?
I’ve used nothing but lithos for several years and never any complaints. Litho quality has improved greatly and if you get the glossy type, most people can’t tell the difference. Howver, you do need to make the lothos from an orginal, so if the photog gives you one or two prints, hang onto them. Carl said that it depends on the coast and he’s probably right. I live in L.A. and just about everyone I know uses lithos… Brad Slaight

We use em most here in the south as well. You really can’t tell them apart, and that ABC URL I gave you does a superb job with them. And they’re much cheaper, AND it’s much easier to print your resume on the back of a photo with your own laser or ink jet printer without difficulty. Geri, I don’t know a photographer worth his salt that would NOT say that to you. Realize, that it is his job to recommend the highest quality to you. But really, with advances in graphics now, lithos, for the money, are the way to go. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – My photographer tells me that casting agents and agents prefer photos overlithos. It depends on your budget. If you want to pay premium prices then copies of original photos is the way to go. On the other hand, there is a company called ABC Pictures at www.abcpictures.com in Missouri — See, you don’t have to live in L.A. to get this sort of thing done — that many folks use for lithos. And, of course, in L.A. area it’s not hard to find folks to do lithos. So, do photo reprints if you have the budget. If not, go with lithos. Myself, I think lithos when done,as other writers here have pointed out, look very good given today’s duplication methods. To be frank, when the casting agent really wants you, they really want you. I have seen where people had polaroids taken of themselves and gotten small roles or even sent in posters of themselves done by ad agencies if they did a print commercial and it worked for them to get roles. If they want you and you are superb then you will get the job. If you can’t do the part and you have even the best photos, well, it won’t do anything at all for you. Still, it’s always better to have the whole package. It’s called professionalism. You are competing with people who do have "package complete." – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Dear Group, My photographer tells me that casting agents and agents prefer photos over lithos. It’s roughly 50/50 in Colorado. And that can create a small problem. When a CD is working with a tall stack of the mix of 8 X 1/2 lithos and 8 X 10 photos, the 8 X 10’s sometimes get lost in the shuffle. Break a leg, Bill — THE ACTING STUDIO http://gvtg.com/theactingstudio

Folks, I recommend, along with ABC, another company: Anderson Graphics, based in L.A. Anderson has a wider range for formats, styles, fonts and their prices are comparable and sometimes cheaper. Response:
Geri, this is really dependent on the coast. Lithos have wider acceptance in LA than New York, but that may be forced economics, since there is so much more work going on out there, and hence it costs a helluva lot more to reproduce quantities. Go with what your agent tells you, tho. I’ve seen both. If you don’t get a good print out of the litho, it’s a nightmare. — Carl Many are called. Few are hosed down. – CASalonen
