Business Portrait Question
Question:
I have a professional 8×10 black & white headshot (am also an actress,) which I have used thus far. What is the industry standard for business portrait size, particularly when requested by the media? Is black & white preferred or is color the norm?<<
Black and white is the norm. As for the size, it doesn’t matter. The newspaper or magazine will re-size the photo to fit their needs. Make sure it’s clear. I have recently opened an executive concierge service, and have had a decent response from the media in my area. With it, comes requests for a photograph. Black and white will be accepted in many more situations than will color. Our main local paper prefers 3 1/2" x 5" photos. Rather than use the studio-photographed head shot (except for the "hired, promoted, opened a business" news section), why not invest in hiring a photographer to take some shots of you in action? Much more dynamic and grabbing. — Steve Holmes, Steve Holmes Productions (helping companies communicate through award-winning video) Iowa City, IA, USA http://www.shpvideo.com

Good question, I run a portrait studio in Ottawa, maybe I can help. Most of the requests we get are for PR photos 5×7 or smaller. Most of the politicans we photograph order wallet size (2.5 X 3") by the dozen, usually in B&W for the newspaper etc. They would know what’s "usual". The truth is all newspapers and magazines etc. can reduce your photo to fit, but the usually prefer them 4×5" or wallet size. Newspapers usually prefer B&W, but just ask them to be sure. I think a 8×10 head shot may be too big, it’s great for an actor’s use but is not standard for most PR requirements. I hope that helped.
