ER Doc Laura Innes Brings Home a Baby

Question:

Another celeb who has adopted internationally is Frances McDormand and her hubby, one of the Cohn brothers. She adopted an older child from Paraguay in 1994. Debbie, mom to three kids born in Paraguay and Guatemala

Response:

What I had in mind was seeing people of influence in those countries doing the adopting, which might help lead to more acceptance within the general population.  The president of Korea came out a few years ago and made some very positive statements about Korean adoptees.  I remember thinking at the time that he would do so much more to encourage adoption within Korea if he, or other public figures, were seen by the Korean people to be adopting children themselves.  Ditto in India.  It is unfortunate that adoption hasn’t taken off in Bollywood the way it has in Hollywood. Julia

So true. Of course, the restrictions of the Hindu Adoption and Maintenance Act would be a problem for many of them; there are a lot of Muslims in Bollywood, many having changed their names to Sanskrit ones so that it’s not obvious. And then there’s the problem that if any of them have bio-kids of both genders, then they can’t adopt. But even one or two would be nice. Rupa

We hear that the actress, who plays the cantankerous Dr. Kerry Weaver on the hit NBC show, will soon join the ranks of adoptive celebrity moms, which include Rosie O’Donnell, Angelina Jolie, and Calista Flockhart. As we went to press, Innes and her actor husband, David Brisbin, were traveling to China to bring home a baby girl. The couple have been waiting eighteen months for the adoption process to be finalized. Innes and Brisbin already have a 12-year-old son, Cal.        I havent read the posts here long enough to know if this was posted as anything other than informative purposes.  I mean ,  am not sure if this is considered in the same league as the questionable adoptions of billiybob and angelijoloie by the folks here. Personally I have seething anger towards them and towards Micheal Jackson in terms of their new adoptions.  I dont have a lot of faith in either of those ‘homestudies’.        However I will go on record right here to say that my kids were in preschool with Cal, Laura and Davids 12 yr old son. They are fabulous parents.  Very NONHollywood type folks. Very hands on and loving parents.  I am thrilled for them in this case.  Just my 2 cents . p.s. She is the exact opposite of her character on ER. She is sweet, laid back and very easy going IRL. That is reassuring to know.  Just as it is a concern that the rich and famous seem to be adorning themselves with adopted children, surely being well off and famous ought not to preclude anyone from adopting. I’d be happy to see a similar trend amongst the famous and influential in countries with too many kids in orphanages.  Maybe that would help break down some of the barriers that prevent these children finding families within their own communities. Julia Several celebrities have adopted from China. As far as I can see, they get on line and wait with everyone else. One of them, whose name escapes me (he was on tv on Hill Street Blues) is very active in the LA chapter of Families with Children from China. Roberta mom to Juliette, 6, adopted 2/4/98 from China
