Johnny Depp Says U.S. Is Like a Stupid Puppy

Question:

But some fools just don’t understand that not being in favor of sending in troops without either support or plan, and against the will and advice of the rest of the world, is NOT the same as supporting Saddam. Perhaps.  But it has the same effect.  If he WERE a Saddam supporter, would he be acting any differently? Therefore, how can you tell he’s not a Saddamite??

Perhaps.  But it has the same effect.  If he WERE a Bush supporter, would he be acting any differently? Therefore, how can you tell he’s not a Bushite??

Response:

Johnny Depp makes his home in France. If that is true, he must feel like an outsider being an American in France.

I would guess that a lot of the people he deals with every day know the difference between the American *people* and the American *government*. — Kimbis

There are thousands and thousands of Americans living in France. Sjoerd

Why on earth would that be? It’s not like he’s the only one, or like the French have ever been notably inhospitable to Americans. miguel — Hit The Road! Photos and tales from around the world: http://travel.u.nu

Response:

so, I wonder whose taxes he’s paying – The whimpy US ones or the outrageous French (maybe both?)?

Actually, you would be surprised. But France has fairly low rates of income tax, together with a fairly inept collection system.  No payroll deduction for instance.  Cheating is a bit of a national sport. What *is* heavy in France is indirect taxes.  VAT stuff.  Last time I looked, 33% on cars for instance.

If you were bin Laden’s best friend and co-conspirator, living undercover in the USA, wouldn’t you try to throw people off the trail by acting like you do? So how can we tell you’re not? miguel — Hit The Road! Photos and tales from around the world: http://travel.u.nu

The Bush administration has not, and seems will not invade Cuba with either the CIA or Military and assassinate Castro. By your logic then Bush and friends must therefore support Castro. You can make the same (faulty) argument for many situations.  I suppose Bush must also support the regime in North Korea too?   The royal house of Saud has an internal faction that supported and funded Al Queda and Bin Laden, yet the US has not taken action against Saudi Arabia.  Does that mean the US supports the Saudi Arabian terrorist agenda? And – um, didn’t the world impost sanctions, trade restrictions, embargoes against Iraq 10 or so years ago?  Does that make all those that participated in those sancations Saddam supporters – or the opposite? Sorry, this is just plain faulty logic.  The same kind of logic the Bush admin. pushed during the lead-up to the invasion of Iraq.  It’s a logic that says that a positive hypothesis must be right (even if there is no supporting evidence) unless or until it’s corresponding negative is proven true.  That is, Iraq has WMD until or unless it is proven that it doesn’t.  Johnny Depp must be a Saddam supporter because there is no proof that he isn’t.  The fact that a large-scale negative can’t be proven logically is, apparently, a concept that Bushites (and the media) can’t fathom. That’s how right-wing-republican neo-cons think in public, and the media is either too timmid or too stupid to challenge it. Iraq is hoping 12,000 might do the trick. That, roughly, is the number of pages in the declaration it turned over to the United Nations in a last-ditch effort to convince the world that it has no weapons of mass destruction. For the moment, the United Nations and the United States are playing along, scouring the document page by page last week for signs that Iraq is lying or fudging the truth. But while the exercise may make for good politics, as a philosophical proposition it is arguably deeply flawed. In fact, some scholars would say the task the world has assigned Iraq
