SAG = Screen Actor’s Guild This is the "Union" for actors and actresses.  It provides a variety of benefits, most notably minimum wages (day and week rates), and health/pension benefits.  Much acting work requires that the actors be members of SAG.   A non-union (non-SAG) actor may be in a Union film if a Taft-Hartley is performed.  Usually, the producers must show SAG that an attempt was made to cast someone already in SAG, or that there is another reason why that person is the only one that can portray the role.  Unless we’re mistaken, you are allowed as a producer up to three Taft-Hartley’s per film… Actors who are not in SAG do non-union acting.  Union (SAG) actors cannot perform in non-union films without permission in advance from SAG (waiver). There is much to explain about the topic, you might want to do some research by visiting someplace like Samuel French’s bookstore in L.A. (probably available online also?). Hope this has helped. The Director
