Britney Spears and morality

Question:

The thing I dislike most about Spears is her influence on young girls…. Like Madonna (and a few others) before her, she is out there normalizing the image that acting like a bubbleheaded slut is an admirable model for women…

The problem is that for many men, bubbleheaded is the ideal–and for many others, it’s slut. Paul – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Recent journal entry: (http://www.invisiblegirl.net/index2.html) Britney Spears is a terrible person. She really is. It’s bad enough that she has, since the beginning of her career, used sexuality to get attention while spouting off about being a Christian — hypocrite — but now she is apparently home wrecking. She’s stolen some guy away from another girl who was very pregnant with his baby. Now Spears is marrying him. Yeah that will last. Has Britney Spears had a real thought in her head, ever? Does she have anything to say? Can she even sing? Here’s a question for you: Do you know anyone who likes Britney Spears? I mean, really likes her and buys her albums? Everyone I know hates her. Everyone I know thinks her music is crap and they would never buy any of her music. I know a lot of people, and I have only met one person who ever liked her, and that person was seven at the time, so it can be forgiven. I have a feeling that the people who dislike Britney Spears far far far out-number the people who like her. So why does Brtiney Spears get $94 million-dollar-contracts with Pepsi? Why did she write a children’s book? Why does anyone care about this silly, shallow, no-talent redneck? What is WRONG WITH US? I love my country, but I can’t stand us right now. I can’t stand that people like Britney Spears and Paris Hilton and Madonna and Lindsey Lohan. I can’t stand our TV programming. I hate the "culture" we are contributing to the world. I hate our vapid consumerism. I’m not a big Fahrenheit 9-11 fan, but the best part of that movie is when Moore showed a hysterical Iraqi woman screaming and crying about how the U.S. had destroyed her family while standing in front of the rubble of her former-home. Then Moore cut to Spears, wearing too much eye make-up and chomping loudly on gum. She stared at the cameraman and then said something like, "I think we should just trust our president to make, like, good decisions for us." It wasn’t the stupidity of the answer that was interesting. It was the shocking contrast between the anguish of the Iraqi woman and the ugly shallowness of Spears. There was Britney Spears, this spoiled, silly girl with no morals and not a thought in her head, who has never had to deal with her home being burned up. She seemed positively annoyed that anyone could ask her a political question. She is the epitome of excess and uselessness. So, why is she so handsomely rewarded for her uselessness? Is this what you want your country to become? Is this what you want to send out into the world? I had drinks with a guy from Canada awhile back, and he said something like, "You know, the U.S. used to be such a classy country." And we were. We were classy. Think of the people who used to be our movie stars: Audrey Hepburn, Cary Grant, Humphrey Bogart, Katharine Hepburn. Even our controversial stars were classy, like Marilyn Monroe or Elizabeth Taylor. Sure, they had torrid love affairs and terrible lives, but they weren’t trashy hypocrites. They weren’t ugly spiritually, like Spears is ugly, or Madonna, or Paris Hilton. I think it says something about the state of our country that we emulate people like Britney Spears. No one really likes her and really wants her to represent us, and yet, she does. She’s an international star and like Michael Jackson or Madonna or Baywatch, people know about her and might even think about her when they think about the U.S. What does she say to the world? She says we have no substance. That we don’t care about talent or content. That we have weird hang-ups about sex. That we are all glitter and sparkle, but no real beauty. That we claim to have morals when doing the immoral — therefore, we are hypocrites. She says that we have zero integrity. Is this what you want? Do you want your children getting this message? Do you want this message floating around in your brain? Who decided this is what we are?

Response:

I hope every woman in Heaven looks and acts like Britney Spears.         You think you’re gonna keep a man by being a fat, nagging frump with the mantra "Not tonight, I have a headache", Thalia? Paul
