men: get unwanted attention when shirtless?
Question:
Unwanted attention from women? That must be an American concept! (-:
LOL Very good!! Only comment I get are from the group of teenage girls that hang around one of the streets I go past. Bit depressing as I’m nearer their mother’s age! I think it’s a subconscious thing – women want to be ‘protected’ by a man, and I guess I don’t look like I’d be very effective in that regard.
Interesting hypothesis. If true, then donning a very visible holster with a brace of colt 45’s should greatly increase your desirability to women. Try it, in the name of science, and get back to us with the results. (Such a test could actually be conducted legally in Houston. Don’t know about Hamilton, Ontario.)
Well, I witness a "non-gun-version" of that test go on all the time. Go to any club, bar, etc, and watch. You’ll see normal-sized, regular guys sitting around bored and dateless, and some huge guys that inevitably are the type that wear too much cologne, act like buffoons, have slick, penis-envy muscle cars, idolize WWF actors, take over the pool tables, think Jack Daniels is a "good" whisky, and eventually get into drunken brawls out in front of the bar (hopefully) at 1:00am. If you pay attention, these men ALWAYS have the hottest, most beautiful women imaginable. At least, that’s how it works here… — David (in Hamilton, Ont) "You can’t burn out if you’ve never caught fire." http://www.angelfire.com/nc/swstudio/racing.html –

What would you do with that kind of women, anyway? If this is the kind of people they are, I haven’t got the time of day for them…

And five years later, the hot, beautiful women are out looking for a more compatible match and the huge guys are… wearing too much cologne, acting like buffoons, idolizing WWF actors, taking over the pool tables, thinking Jack Daniels is a "good" whisky, and eventually getting into drunken brawls out in front of the bar. If DNA had its way in the former matchup, however, their child support payments no longer permit them to own the slick, penis-envy muscle cars.

When I am shirtless many people mistakenly think I am wearing a sweater, so it’s not a problem.
Is that why they call you "Harry?" Mary
Response:
My wife thinks I’m "ugly" she says she doesn’t like skinny men. I’m 54, 5′10 and weigh 144 lbs. I feel fine, I’m always being told I look "sick". You have to understand, that down here in Arkansas, moon pies, whoppers, and anything with a ton of grease is considered a food group! So, most people are FAT. I ran without a shirt for a while, but became self-conscious because I could see my rib cage. At 54 I don’t have any sex appeal, so getting unwanted attention from female runners is a loooong shot at best! LOL Lloyd Hanning
– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – as somewhat an offshoot of the shirtless running question, i was wondering if other men get unwanted attention from women (and i suppose gay men, although that’s never happened to me) when running topless? it seems to increase the thinner and stronger your upper body is. usually when i run i just want to be alone, so sometimes i’ll just put on a loose shirt to be more anonymous. anybody else have to deal with this? is this why you don’t work your upper bodies?
Response:
But in general, I think Dave nailed it on the head. Few distance runners have very strong abdominal muscles too which I find to be (at least at the teenage level) a very big factor in whether a guy is attractive or not. Although a female distance runner’s physique is very appealing, it does not go the same way for men unless they’re complimenting their running with abdominal or upper body isolation exercises.
Well, I’ve got a perfectly fine, very visible ’six-pack’. My pecs are defined and have full shape (i.e. not ’sunken’ like many skinny guys!). I have extremely well-defined calves, as well. My body fat is as low as any pro triathlete – I’ve seen them up close. Still, as far as I can tell, women will always go for the huge, hairy, beefy guys. I think it’s a subconscious thing – women want to be ‘protected’ by a man, and I guess I don’t look like I’d be very effective in that regard.

Similarly. The only unwanted attention I have received is when someone aimed their truck at me and I had to jump for the ditch. Response:
I think David’s right, though: skinny male distance runner physiques are not particularly attractive to the ladies. But if, like me, you go to the gym regularly and lift as well as run, you may have something to "worry" about.
I see on surveys- the two physical attractive areas are the face and legs. The chest ranks lower. Running weathers the face faster than people who stay inside, so it is a negative there. However, running helps people keep their legs in adolescent leaness which attracts some people. I sometimes get comments on "thighs of steel".
Response:
What kind of attention? Getting noticed or getting whistled at, or spoken to, or getting followed, getting groped? It all depends on how that manifests itself. Being looked leaves me indifferent. I haven’t really noticed so I must not be getting any. What I tell myself is that if I run fairly fast, wear slit shorts, a running singlet, am covered in sweat and look athletic, some people are bound to notice me. As for what goes on in their heads when they look at/see me, I have no clue. I don’t normally get bothered by anyone (only 3 occasions in perhaps 350 runs since I started). They don’t seem to care about me. One more thing…I get a lot more attention (so I’m told) when I have a shirt on than I do when my shirt is off, and I do, on average, about 250 sit-ups every time just before I shower, and I often shower as many as 5 or 6 times a day… – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – It’s never really been an issue to me as most of my runs are either in the woods or on the mountains and there is a very high percentage of sedentary people where I live…Most of them smoke to stay thin… On top of that, I’m very, very bad at realizing when a girl is paying extra attention to me so I don’t really notice. I have a built in defense against such things, natural ugliness.
While other runners may be more likely to appreciate a thin body, human nature being what it is, you can’t really say what men or women like. In my younger days I often traveled on business with another man. When we would come across a couple of women we never once chose the same one. — Dia ’s Muire duit Joe M
Response:
well, men obviously want thin women. i think women want thin men as well, but also want big muscles. i meant "thinner" as in low body fat…which does not preclude huge muscles (look at any body building competition versus power lifting). maybe you work out in a military base or something? or a monks retreat? – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -I don’t get any attention, and I run shirtless all of the time. I rarely, if ever, run "in public" shirtless…a tank is about as "showy" as I will get, and yes I am relatively well developed in the upper body but am not into flaunting it… Mike C
