AC: doxorubicin & cytoxin

Question:

<< Seems like several women I’ve talked to who had Taxotere, had worse long-term or permanent peripheral neuropathy than the Taxol-takers.   I had both–2 Taxol and then 2 Taxotere.  The Taxotere was definately easier than the Taxol for me.  I had different side effects with each.  Peripheral neuropathy was worse with the Taxol which, according to my oncologist and what I’ve read, that seems to be the norm.  However, my white blood cell count went much lower with the Taxotere and I had fevers with it.  I also had a weight gain 10 days later that lasted for a week or more.  I was in agony for 6 days with Taxol; however, my oncologist said that most don’t react to it like that. If I had to make the choice again after having each, I would go with the Taxotere.

Response:

TAXOTERE? in that same article, i read that Taxotere is supposed to be chemically equivalent to Taxol, & that Taxotere does not have as many side effects. after the AC treatments are finished, i am supposed to have Taxol treatments.

My doctor tried Taxotere on me.  I had AC treatments, skipped the Taxol treatments, and then developed bone mets.  Doc tried Taxotere on me.  The side effects, for me, were SO MUCH worse than AC was… I couldn’t stand it. I have found that the 24-hour infusion method of AC was much easier on my personal bod than the regular way.  You might ask your doc about that.  I highly, highly recommend getting a port-a-cath installed. i am very nervous about it, because my brother Robert was driving back & forth in front of that house on Monday, when the worker & i were working there, …. & it scared both of us. Robert was acting/looking angry & "off", which is dangerous. i hate to ask the police for help again.

Why not?  That’s what they’re there for.  Can you take out a TRO on him? sometimes, life is very tough, you know?

Yup.  I won’t issue you with any platitudes, except to say that cancer and chemo have taught me to take my pleasures where and when I get them. — Aloha, Catharine Character is what you do when no one’s watching.

Purely subjective/anecdotal, and we all know how much *that’s* worth, but:  Seems like several women I’ve talked to who had Taxotere, had worse long-term or permanent peripheral neuropathy than the Taxol-takers.  Other than that, it doesn’t seem like I’ve heard drastic differences — some had bad or good experiences with either or both. Response:

These are adriamycin and cytoxin  A/C.  The side effects with the taxanes vary – one woman in my chemo center ended up in a wheelchair for a while from the taxotere – now is fine on taxol just needs a cane. Another had the same problem with taxol & is ok now on taxotere.  Both are good drugs – the thing I like about taxol is that it can be given weekly (in smaller doses) so the side effects are not bad at all. Herceptin is for people who are HER2/neu +  - I do not remember, Su – were you?  I am & will start on Herceptin weekly for a year when I start rads.  My onc is willing to give it to me outside of clinical trials, even though at this point I have no mets.   I had considered not doing rads til later – but I know with my HER2/neu status local recurrance is likely.  So, for me, I will feel better if I hit it hard & hit it fast. You have to do what you think is best for you!    Do you have a list of questions for your onc?  Write them down & take them with you – a tape recorder is always a good idea, too.   My first appt with onc was 3 1/2 hours – he examined me, but mostly we talked.   I was very lucky to find this one – and it was all by accident.   The one my primary wanted would not accept my insurance, so II had to find my own.      Be careful at that house!

Sue, You are doing great, Doxorubicin and cytoxin is standard treatment. You will loose all your hair. I thought Taxotere is all pretty much routine but I would ask. Herceptin is unfortunately for stage IV, ( you are not sick enough). Ignore your brother, you are doing great considering all facotrs! Alex

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – DOXORUBICIN & CYTOXIN i just learned, that the chemotherapy mix i would have gotten at Meth Hosp in Houston, would probably have been doxorubicin & cytoxin (cyclophosphamide). so far, i have only had time to read about doxorubicin, but i am trying to learn about the pros & cons of each drug/medicine. HERCEPTIN? in the first article that i read, it said that Herception was a new-ish drug for HER2+ cancers, that was supposed to be better than (and/or to improve the effects of), the standard doxorubicin/AC treatment. ??? TAXOTERE? in that same article, i read that Taxotere is supposed to be chemically equivalent to Taxol, & that Taxotere does not have as many side effects. after the AC treatments are finished, i am supposed to have Taxol treatments. ??? ouch!  my mind is now completely boggled, so i am taking a break. i have a headache. susan, su_texas  my opinions PS  my helper is going to medical appts this week, so i probably wont have help working at the condemned house. i am very nervous about it, because my brother Robert was driving back & forth in front of that house on Monday, when the worker & i were working there, …. & it scared both of us. Herceptin is only available in clinical trials unless there’s evidence of distant metastasis (Stage IV). Some people might disagree that Taxotere has fewer side effects. Everyone responds to chemo differently. — allan grossman http://www.cancersupporters.com take this, spambots! humans can reach me at wizard at cancersupporters dot com
