axe murderer analogy
Question:
hi, why can’t we be whatever on stage? i could be that rapist living next to you, i could be the man who pulls a .45 and smiles when he pulls the trigger. i think it is all what we let our mind do. it is moreso just facing those nasty demons in our head and dealing with it. a person can be anything they want. we are all born of the same physical or base genetic stuff. we are everything already. oh well, my two cents on character development. dirk. — http://www.dordt.edu/~drkzwrt "Quod scripsi scripsi" * * * * * [This message was posted to the ACTING-L mailing list and relayed to this newsgroup. I strongly believe in the imagination – I prefer using the "as if" method. In that, the imagination is relied upon heavily. However, don’t you think that in theatre it’s easier to get caught up in the character’s life since it goes straight through from Act I to Act III as opposed to T.V. and movies where it’s filmed out of sequence. I think in the out of sequence way, emotional memory may be more helpful to some. I’m not saying it’s good or bad, just that that may be one aspect of the biz that could utilize it more so. Again, I’m not condoning it, just seeing where it may play an important part for some. I, personally, think the imagination is highly underrated in the media. Most movies leave very little to the imagination – unfortunately. That’s why the books are usually much better than the movies – because our imaginations are much better than anything they could produce on film – again, usually. As somebody says in APPLAUSE, "The movies is a bastard art" (sic). The "as if" is one of my favorite tools, too. Along with "what if" (which in essence may be the same thing you’re referring to).
