Linden Method

Question:

Hey guys.. first of all i would like to thank all of you for replying back.  I really really appreciate all your replies.  You cannot possibly imagine how good I felt after reading your repiles.. Its very hard for me to talk about this to anyone, as no one can really quite understand what I am talking about.  Certainly done blame anyone for htat, as its hard enough for me to articulate my feelings into words.

Consider yourself lucky that you know a little about what you are dealing with at a young age.  Many of us went many years without a diagnosis.  I drank to combat it.  Before I knew it 25 years had passed and I was a full blown suicidal alcoholic. Also, I had a little bit of a controversial question..  I used to smoke marijuana (about once a month).  Since I had this, I have been smoking it once a week (weekends) and everytime I smoke I dont get any panics that day.  I am not sure if in the long run this is adversely affect it, but does anyone have any options on it.. positive or negative?

Back in the day when I smoked pot it only made my anxiety worse… actually it may have been making my paranoia worse… which is an entirely different problem.  I never heard of it with pot, but with alcohol you will get "rebound anxiety".  The next day it comes back worse than before.  Be sure that doesn’t happen with the pot or you could end up taking a 25 year journey through hell like I did. I won’t tell you not to do it.  We all are different.  Just remember that just because it’s natural, doesn’t mean it’s good for you. THanks again for all your help.. it is very much appreciated.

You are quite welcome.  That’s what this place is all about! Tony — The charter is available at: http://readystump.algebra.com/~asapm

You will become dependent on niravam with daily use. That is not addiction. More than likely, you will ‘not’ become addicted to your benzo. It is important you talk to your doctor about your concerns regarding addiction. Maybe he can put your mind at ease. Some informative links regarding benzo addiction….. http://panicdisorder.about.com/cs/benzosbasics/a/addiction.htm http://panicdisorder.about.com/library/weekly/aa082797.htm I suggest you educate yourself about addiction VS dependency so you can make informed decisions regarding the treatment of your anxiety disorder. I highly recommend the book "Panic Disorder" by William D. Kernodle, M.D.  Chapters 12, "The Misunderstood Benzodiazepines" and 13, "The Role of Benzodiazepines in the Treatment of Panic Disorder" being must reads. This link is about discontinuing xanax, there is other good info on xanax and benzo`s in general. http://lexington-on-line.com/naf_xanax.html ::too young to be making this medicatoin a daily part of my life, or is ::it something thats necessary and I should learn to live with? of incredible suffering. I didn`t even have a diagnosis at your age. I just thought I was crazy. :) If meds taken on a daily basis gives quality to your life…..then it doesn`t matter if you are 10, 20, 40 or 80. I strongly urge you to ditch the pot. Pot made me panic really bad. You may not panic right after smoking, it could make you more anxious or panicky hours later. You don`t want to partake in anything that is going to interfere with you getting better. It`s also pretty common for people with anxiety and panic to self-medicate their disorder. Is it possible that you are smoking more for that reason? ::THanks again for all your help.. it is very much appreciated. We are here for you! If there is anything we can do, don`t hesitate to ask. Hi, I must have somehow missed your first post.. Welcome to the group!  You are in a safe, supportive place, with many knowlegable people willing to help you understand your condtion. You are young.  The older you get, the more you will find that most things that look too good to be true  - usually are.  I’d file the Linden Method under that heading  .. because I don’t know anybody who’s conquered anxiety instantly, like that ad suggests. I wish I did ;( — It’s the same thing as those diet pill ads with the before and after pictures.. They tell you what you want to hear so you’ll pay the money.. they just want money, I promise you.. we wouldn’t have a support group if there were *any* instant cures for anxiety and panic.  It’s not a death sentence. You CAN learn to cope with it.  It does not have to ruin your life.. but it takes work, it takes medication at times. I am not familiar with the medication you are taking, but you may get by on only an occasional, as needed dose. I have had times when I took no medication for a few months.  I have had times I have to take it all day every day.  It seems to vary.  I don’t worry about addiction nearly as much as I worry about having a panic attack. If you have enough bad ones, and get relief from a pill, you will understand where I am coming from.  There are people here that can explain to you what addiction is vs. what dependence is.. there is a difference. I do understand about feeling young and not wanting to take a pill everyday.  I’m way older than you, and I feel the same way.  I have lived undiagnosed and untreated, and I have llved diagnosed, with medication.  I’ll take the latter one, anyday.  Sometimes, nothing but medication works. Sometimes you can work through the anxiety with techniques you can learn in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. Either way, the good news is that you have this disorder in a day and time where it can be treated and you can cope with it.  If you had this 100 years ago, you’d be up the creek. Now, uh.. let’s get this straight?  You are uneasy about taking a medication that a doctor prescribes, but you are willing to smoke pot? Think on that one, awhile. If the rationale is that pot is not addictive, that is true. It’s also true that pot is loaded with more tar than cigarettes.  It’s also true (and I know what I’m talking about) that the people that you get the pot from usually have other goods to sell, and before you know it, you’re doing lots more than pot. It’s also true that many schizophrenic patients will swear to you their disorder came from smoking pot.  I’m not claiming pot causes schizophrenia, but try and tell that to a schizophrenic that believes it does.  I have read that there could be a corealation.  Personally, I don’t recommend pot to anyone with any sort of mental disorder of any kind, and I smoked  more pot in the 70’s than  you will if you live to be 300.  I just do not think it is a wise choice.  Any form of self medication is unwise, and also, stay away from alcohol.. it will increase, not decrease your anxiety.  Let the doctor treat your anxiety.. not you.  I also recommend getting a psychiatrist that is qualified to treat you for this.  A pediatrician does not have the proper education on this subject. 22 is old enough to have a grown up doctor, I’d had 2 kids by the time I was your age. As to the course of the disorder, and will you have this forever, etc.. no body can tell you. I know of some who have very long, extended periods (years) without anxiety, and it comes back later in life.  I’ve gone months without needing any medication, myself.  I think that’s an individual thing.. not predictable.  You CAN choose to look at it as something horrible, and awful and doomed for life, etc.. or you can see it as something you can and will learn to deal with over time.  The way you want to view it, that’s up to you. I pick the second way myself. That first way isn’t too helpful. It will increase your anxiety to see it like that.  That is one of the things you will learn in CBT. You take care, you come back often. Read and post, and educate yourself. Things are less scary the more you understand them.. again, welcome. Hi, I am 22 years old and was recently diagnosed w/anxiety disorder.  Used to be an avid adventurer (skydiving, paragliding, rock climbing, the whole bit..). the more i read about it the better i feel.. i do get a lot of chest pains, on the left side of my chest and that is usually my biggest worry as i fear a heart attack.. reading so much about it does make me feel a LOT better that I am not the only one.. it does happen to many people and does not result in a mortal catastrophe.

Sorry to hear about you developing this junk.  I was 22 when I had my first panic attack as well. 1. I try to refrain from taking Niravam as i dont want to get too dependent on it.  Is this the correct thinking of will my situation worsen if I dont take the medication?  I have been learning to control my pains a little and often just suffer through the pain w/o doing anything, but sometimes they are just too much and I pop a pill (usually once a week).  After finding out that they are symptoms of anxiety and not a dangerous physical condition, i can try to control it.

Have you had a medical check-up to make sure everything is OK?  There are a lot of people that take Xanax/alprazolam only when needed.  It is up to you how you should take it.  If it helps, why not use it more often so that you feel better most of the time instead of just once a week?  There are also better benzodiazepines that you could take IMO. Xanax is fast acting but wears off really fast and many people have to take it many times a day.  Have you gone to see a psychiatrist?  That is your best option IMO, since a psychiatrist will have the best knowledge about anxiety disorders and treatment methods. 2. The pains in the left chest area, sometimes streching out the the back and left arm.. is this ‘normal’ for anxiety disorder?

As long as you got a good check-up from your doctor, then yes it can be "normal".  Anxiety can cause all kinds of scary side-effects: nausea, confusion, rapid heart beat, tightness of breadth, etc. 3. I am trying to find as much info as I can about it, and stumbled upon a popular (from amazon.com reviews, http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/customer-reviews/0954980301/ref=cm_c…) and infamous on google groups, Linden Method.  Has anyone PERSONALLY tried it?  I am certainly willing to dish out $100 if that can mean a cure to my anxiety, but dont want to be left w/the feeling of being cheated, as I somehow feel it will aggravate my anxiety..

Hmmmm.  I bought the Linden method.  Basically it is a type of therapy where the Linden guy believes that the symptoms are all in your head and you can retrain your brain and be symptom free.  It sounds great. However, before I bought it, I could not find *1* source on the Internet that verified it as a valid treatment option.  I bought it anyway because I wanted to get better.  I purchased the download version.  I later deleted it from my hard drive and just accepted the fact that I wasted more than $100.  The only places on the Internet that have "positive" reviews are the Linden web site and some feedback-type sites.  It is real easy for people from the Linden company to just create some dummy Amazon users and give it great reviews. The Linden method claims 95% and 100% success (the site is not consistent).  However, the way the Linden method comes up with those number is if it doesn’t work for you, they say you didn’t do it right and don’t count you.  Honestly, there is no cure for anxiety disorders.  There are treatments, however I know of no single treatment that can claim a 90% or better success rate.  If there were a treatment for anxiety disorders that worked for 90% of the people who tried it, *every* doctor would know about it and it would always be the first treatment option. 4. I would love to hear anything else anyone else can say about it.. Any response will be highly appreciated. Cheers,
