Is Tiger Overrated.?

Question:

I think Tiger is overrated.! Don’t you.?

Sure.  I doubt he’ll win over half the tournaments he plays next year. Next thing you know, Nike will sue him for non performance.   -joseph

Response:

No.

Taking into account his 8 wins in one season, it could be concluded that he is as good as Johnny Miller was in his heyday, except Tiger still has to win a British Open. Who knows what the future bodes – Perhaps he will become TV personality :) Graham

If you’re talking about all the hype about him being the "best ever," I’d agree.  He’ll have to earn that moniker over time.  It’s not out of the question, but he’s got a long ways to go.  But he’s clearly head and shoulders above anyone else in the world right now.  And with his 24th birthday coming up on December 30th, there’s every reason to believe he hasn’t peaked yet (now there’s a scary thought). It’s fair to say that if his career ended tomorrow, he’d be a shoe-in for the Hall of Fame already.  That’s not the sort of thing most players could say after completing just their third full year on TOUR. GBM wrote … Taking into account his 8 wins in one season, it could be concluded that he is as good as Johnny Miller was in his heyday, except Tiger still has to win a British Open.

True, although Miller never won The Masters or the PGA (the two majors Tiger has captured).  Tiger now has as many career majors (2) as Johnny Miller won in his entire career.  I have a sneaking suspicion Tiger might win another one or two. Plus, Miller was named Player of the Year just ONCE in his career.  Tiger has now been named POY two times in his first three full years on TOUR. About the only edge Miller has on Tiger is that Miller won 24 career titles (actually, 25 — back when he won the British Open, it wasn’t counted as an "official" win, though nobody in their right mind doesn’t count it), compared to Tiger’s 15 career PGA TOUR titles.  Although who really thinks Tiger won’t catch him?  At the rate he’s going, he may catch him before the final major in 2000. Overrated?  I think not. Randy

Response:

Sounds like trolling to me, but I’ll bite.  I may not "like" Tiger, but he is clearly ahead of the pack at this point in his career.  He appears to be more talented than anyone else.  His game has my respect.  If he doesn’t get bored with the game, he may be the best ever. -Andy

Overated? In what sense? Does he have to win evey tournament he plays in to get your vote? Your approval? Not sure if you even watch golf…It is not like he is God… Just, by far, the best golfer in the world. -D

I’m sure competition is hotter these days, so it’s hard, but fun, to

Johhny Miller won in 1976 against a field that included Jack Niclaus, Seve Ballesteros, Gary Player, Raymond Floyd, Nick Faldo, Doug Sanders, Gene Littler, Tom Kite, Hubert Green, David Graham and a few others – Is that not HOT enough competition :) except Tiger still has to win a British Open. And to steal from another thread: One can’t be considered a great player unless he wins in the U.S.^H^H^H^H UK.

Do we have to guess what to fill in for ^H^H^H^H ? My guess is:  ……. and even more important, in the …. Who knows what the future bodes – Perhaps he will become TV personality

I don’t think he has what it takes to be president of the USA :) – Too good at golf for one thing.

Luck doesn’t get you 8 wins in one season on the PGA tour except Tiger still has to win a British Open.

He’s 24 and has been a pro for less than 4 years and has 2 majors, looks to me like he’s got another good 26 years left. One can’t be considered a great player  unless he wins in the U.S.^H^H^H^H

UK. He has….Ever heard of the PGA Championship Or President…

Better a golfer than a B movie actor

Oh I don’t know about that.  His taste in women is sure better than our current Philanderer-In-Chief. Randy

I agree with Randy who said Tiger is going to have to prove himself over time. A young flexible body sometimes doesn’t last the test of time like The Golden Bear did. Overhype (Major) by media to sell the sponsorships. Sure he is good. Will he win the US OPEN in 2025.? Don’t think so. He can’t put well enough.!

I think you may be putting too much emphasis on his body and not enough on his brain.  Remember he has been playing since a very early age and he rebuilt his swing last year.  If anyone can adapt to time, he can. Rick

Yes … and everyone said all the same things about Johnny Miller when he was still going.  Everyone said Miller would catch Nicklaus. Point being that, though Mr. Woods shows every indication of being great, probably greatest — many before have done so and something has happened. Woods’ back could go out — his putting could leave him (ala Miller) — or he could just start to stink (though I would not bet on that).

I was joking :-) Not my quote matey. Please get your headers right or I’ll sue. (That’s a joke too, BTW.) One can’t be considered a great player  unless he wins in the U.S.^H^H^H^H UK. As noted this refers to a comment in another thread (the Montie one). I messed up by assuming folk knew what ^H meant – silly mistake, sorry – it means <backspace. Hence, "… in the UK".

You should be clear on whether your joking is based on  "British Humour" or "American Humour" – One of these could be an oxymoron. GM
