Female singers – here is what I was trying to say

Question:

… I generally stick to my 60’s, 70’s, and early 80’s British rock music.  To me, it comes through as genuine.  Period.

Ah, yes, Depeche Mode, Culture Club, Petshop Boys, the Cure…makes me long for the days when…oops! ;-D

Response:

too many ‘popular’ {at the time..} female vocalists {Celine Dion, Whitney Houston..} as they were ‘trying too hard’ -didn’t sound natural to her and she would say they were more concerned with hitting high octaves ’showing off’ than honest emotion or feeling what they were actually singing. :)

OK – Whitney (live), Mariah and many others certainly were concerned mainly with showing off (vocal gymnastics), but Celine? – just the opposite (back then, at least) – she would often nurse a single note through so many different emotions that it seemed to add a new dimension to vocal presentation. For all the derision Celine has received for having the audacity to record music that is played to death, there still hasn’t arisen a worthy successor (except maybe Delta Goodrem in years to come).

I guess what I was trying to say is this. Have you ever been to a play where one of the actors was trying too hard to act?  Everything they do is over the top and mellow dramatic.  You don’t believe that they are their character you just see them as actors. Then on the flip side a really good actor.  You believe he or she is really their character.  They do such a good job acting that are not their character.  In fact they may be exactly opposite personalitywise. On a couple of community theater productions the actors come out into the lobby to say hello to friends and family.  The good actors always take me by surprise because they are so "normal" as compared to their character. The same applies to female (and admittedly male singers).  Many seem to sing over the top instead of singing from their heart.  I have seen women singers who I just did not believe them.  They were singing about this or that, but I just did not buy it. There again, I have seen singers pour out their emotions and I got caught up in it too.  When they were angry, I was angry, when they were sad, I was sad, etc.  Now that is great singing! David

Tom Cruise exemplified this in Risky Business.  He BECAME Joel. Him and that Rebeccawhatshername? were great together. Best part about that movie is the TANGERINE DREAM soundtrack bits ‘Love on a Real Train’, ‘Get off the Babysitter’ and the ‘Guido the Killer Pimp’ theme with the guitar /etc. TD & all their analog synths.  Most of those pieces were extended mixes of tunes from their earlier Force Majure album.  If you like the RB stuff get FM it has the pieces just lengthened, more developed that go on a bit longer! wait..what does this have to do with female singers?  A girl I used to know was a singer, her and I saw Risky Business together in the theater {surround sound/etc.} and we used to listen to Tangerine Dream on her mega-stereo and she would talk about not liking too many ‘popular’ {at the time..} female vocalists {Celine Dion, Whitney Houston..} as they were ‘trying too hard’ -didn’t sound natural to her and she would say they were more concerned with hitting high octaves ’showing off’ than honest emotion or feeling what they were actually singing. :) This was after a few.. well, you know.. ;o)-~

What industry people call pop, and R&B(give me a break), doesn’t work for me.  That is, today’s versions of those music styles. The heart and soul of original music, written and performed by the artist, sells me. The Matrix songwriters don’t.
