guilty about a conflict
Question:
I am currently in rehearsal for a community theater production. I told the director during auditions that I had a conflict with a performance date. He cast me anyway in a leading role. He said that he would work it out. His solution is to understudy me with an experienced actor for the one night that I won’t be there. I have never heard of community theaters doing this. Has anyone else? It is really making me feel guilty that this guy has to go through six weeks of rehearsal to perform for one night. The show only runs 3 weeks. I know I wouldn’t do it if asked. Any thoughts?
Response:
If the actor agreed to do it, why feel guilty? The director could have not cast you based on your conflict, so I’d consider yourself lucky. Wayne

Give your understudy two more performances. Ed Hooks

Question: Is the part yours? In any major production there is always the possibility that someone in the cast will become ill or injured and an understudy will have to go on. If you feel quilty about your understudy working through the rehearsal process and only being on stage for one performance, quit and give your understudy your leading opportunity. Have you understudied a part? If so, you will remember that you never knew when you would be called upon to give a credible performance. This can often happen with but a few moments notice, or even during a performance in the rare case. Please consider your acting future before you let yourself get so caught up in the guilt feelings you describe. If you really want to be an actor you’ll have to realize there will be times when you must make tough decisions. For you this may be the first. Good luck and break a leg. Michael
