Interest in a new UK newsgroup?
Question:
Would there be any interest in a new, UK acting newsgroup? Something along the lines of alt.acting.uk. It’s just that there are a lot of bits about America in here, and I’m sure that there would be interest in a UK-only version. What does everyone think? M-P
If there were such a thing, I would have thought it should be in the uk heirarchy, not the alt or rec ones, if you want it to be more parochial. To take an example from existing groups, rec.music.folk is full of US-centric singer-songwriter stuff, with a small amount of traditional music from the English-speaking world, whereas uk.music.folk covers what’s going on over here, with an appropriately higher proportion of traditional music, and only deals with ss’s who are from here, have a profile here, or write about here, which I expect is the kind of balance you’d like in your new group. regards Alan Kearns

I’m in LA, but I would love to know what you all are specifically are doing and how you are living the life, as it were. Do it! I’m for it! Hey all… Thanks for all the support! I didn’t think that anyone would be very interested! What I’d like to do know is to go around and get more interest, go around the other newsgroups and the like. Anyone who wants to advertise this idea anywhere, please do! Thanks again, (James) M-P
I’ve never set up a Usenet group, but if I were to try, I’d be very careful about posting around and advertising etc. You are bound to fall foul of Netiquette. I suggest you read up/find out about the right way to do it first. Perhaps a more knowledgeable poster could point you towards the inevitable FAQ? Alan Kearns

? I have set up one newsgroup before, and there are no breaches of Netiquette whatsoever. It isn’t invading peoples’ privacy, as it is posting on public domain. M-P

I think that you have a point there. Anybody else have any thoughts? M-P

one spell theatre? Joking aside, I think its a great idea I don’t know much about setting up a newsgroup but if you can, I’d be a definite observer/contributor. Robin.

The same way you do, if one treads the boards

It’s really very simple: when you are subscribing to usenet newsgroups in most software, the option to start a new group can be found in that portion of the software. At least, that’s how it works through Netscape Communicator. Best of luck in your endeavour <g. I feel I must point out, however, in rec.arts.theatre.stagecraft we manage to cross the boundaries quite successfully. It gives us exposure to ideas and views we would not otherwise experience. My tuppence.

I suppose so long as "acting" is in the title, users can Find the N.G. easily enough. Having said that, if we stuck it in alt.acting.uk, we could start the ball rolling for other countries to do the same. Or we could hide ourselves in uk.arts (was it?) ? — http:www.spa.mcmail.com

Excellent idea, James. Would you or anyone else like to consider alt.acting.amdram too for the wannabies in the crowd while we’re at it? That would be fun. I’m an anglophile when it comes to acting. The high level of training and theatre tradition fascinate me. Emma Thompson was asked " Can everyone in England act?" She paused , then said " Yes." I’ve heard that some brits admire American actors. I see great value here, but also a disproportionate amount of "actors" who aren’t artists, just artistic. But heh, I live and work in LA. CD
