I know what you mean. I’ve read so many spoilers that I already know the whole movie scene for scene, but I still want to see it.

Response:

We saw it last night at 12:01 and it was freaking AWESOME!!!!  If you’ve never seen a movie at a midnight showing, DO.  Best time I’ve ever had. — Opus (: http://members.home.net/coble/OpusGraphics -Websets and Graphics http://drewcarey.acmecity.com/kate/43 -Blade Pro Presets "Well my dad has only had 4 bypasses, and he eats all the steak he wants."– Hank Hill

Hey,     I’m interested in your questions about Qui.  I’ll keep an eye out for you.  I’m no star wars expert so I want to learn more about it.  It sure was a great movie. I saw _Batman_Forever_ at a 12:01 showing, whenI was in NY state. I had to make threats of physical harm to the persons I was with; 3,000+ km from home, and there’s no way they were gonna strand me there… but Star Wars kicks *ss. I’ve got questions about Neeson’s character interpretation, but that can wait a couple of weeks until more people will have seen the movie. Ciao,  Neil

Carla, Did the same thing.  It was wild.  I’m seeing it again this weekend with some old college buddies. Mike

Response:

well, I for one think Qui Gonn Jinn is a horrible name. Its too Asian sounding. It would be fine if the character was Asian (which I think wouldve been a VERY cool twist), but on a big white dude it just seems strange. Lucas and the production designers were obviously very influenced by Asian cultures- many of Queen Amidalla’s costumes were identical to costumes worn by Medieval Mongolian princesses. (Oh god, how sad that I know this!)

Odd that you mention this:  both John and I could have sworn that the two alien dudes in the beginning were speaking with Asian accents.  I still think they were Asian. — Opus (: http://members.home.net/coble/OpusGraphics -Websets and Graphics http://drewcarey.acmecity.com/kate/43 -Blade Pro Presets "Well my dad has only had 4 bypasses, and he eats all the steak he wants."– Hank Hill

Response:

Remember…..they’re "A long time ago…in a galaxy far, far away…." so it doesn’t necessarily follow that the actor playing Qui Gonn Jinn  should be Asian….  I think that’s part of Lucas’ point…..to basically force (no pun intended) us into this different world and freeing us of what we think should be conventions….

Aww, theres so much love in this ng!

I’m interested. Why do you know this? – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – i don’t like the way you just throw the word "asian" around in this context, since the only thing asian about medieval mongolians is that they lived in asia (ie. they didn’t look like the people that we call asians today). Well, youre half right. Ancient Mongols were known to have "Un-Asian" features like reddish hair and bluish eyes, but that doesnt mean they looked nothing like modern Asians. They looked not much different than modern Mongols. the "true" mongolians pretty much all migrated to asia minor (present day turkey) and parts of the old soviet union. Well technically the Turks migrated to Asia minor after the Mongols drove them out of Persia, but since the Turks were relatives of the Mongols I can’t say youre wrong. On the other hand, I would hardly call the fragments of the Mongol population that moved westward "True" Mongols. The majority did stay in Mongolia.

And by the way – did you know the ancient Scythians relished fermented Yak’s milk?? well they sure did!

Response:

Archaeologic digs in Western China have uncovered mummified remains of tall, red haired, blue eyed individuals. The weave and patterns of their garments indicate a realtionship to the European Celts ca. 1500 bce (appx). Weaving techniques unkown to these peoples’  "Chinese" contemporaries to the east All that can be known for sure is that the more humans seem to change- the more we remain the same. We move around, we have conflict, we live, we die- and that which was, disappears in the flash of an eye. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – i don’t like the way you just throw the word "asian" around in this context, since the only thing asian about medieval mongolians is that they lived in asia (ie. they didn’t look like the people that we call asians today).   Well, youre half right. yeah, those people are called Tocharians. They originated in Central Asia and did have caucasian features. In fact they probably were more caucasian than Asian looking.  Weird.

sure. So did the Mongols. They made booze out of it and often drank themselves to death.

Pencils?? Hmm,,well I guess it was after the 13th century, because they were illiterate before then.

What is it about Asian history that interests you so much? What role if any did  acting & theatre play in their distant history?  :)
