Worst golf announcer..Len Berman, Al Michaels or Brent Musberger???

Question:

Talking about Chris Berman of ESPN And he’s done golf when? Didn’t he do the Thurs/Friday US OPEN this year?

I think GoBucks 10 is referring to Berman’s nightly US Open highlight coverage at Southern Hills with Andy North on ESPN.  Yeah, Berman’s style is pretty tacky for golf, but I didn’t think it was as nearly as bad as Musberger (who we had to listen to all season on ABC….you’re looking LIVE! down at the Big Horn Golf Club")…..not even close.  About on par with Al Michaels IMHO.  But at least Al Michaels wasn’t trying to cover the US Open. That is the dollar talking. ESPN demographics are the young male, beer drinker, etc. The point of the civil rights laws is that the money shouldn’t trump respect for people as individuals which is why Berman is a bad announcer and ESPN isn’t the social good guys they claim to be or think they are.

Civil rights law?  What the hell does that have to do with sports announcers.  I like Berman (for football studio shows only), and so do a lot of other people.  You don’t.  That doesn’t make him a bad announcer in my book. Len Berman is a talking head doing sports on local TV in New York City. He doesn’t do much if any play by play. Maybe NFL games on the radio. Chris Berman is the worst announcer of all period. He treats his audience like shit with his cute names. Guys like him are why the ADA got passed – if you will not respect those less fortunate, the law will make you. Trick Question – Answer:  None, because none regularly broadcast golf. {Bighorn wasn’t really golf!}  Michaels looked good compared to the ’stewardess chaser’ [aka Frank Gifford] and how-ud co-sell, but he’s not up to snuff per the best of the Sunday broadcasters.  Berman is a host-hyper {or is it hyper-host?}. Musberger is doing college football and, actually, that’s his best venue; with a good second banana, he’s almost listenable. The CBS golf crew is simply the best of the group.  Can you imagine all the majors being done with the Masters’ finesse and minimal commercial messages?  {Yes, the BBC has no commercials, but the coverage isn’t as good and you have to pay taxes to support your network.}  The way ABC does the British, it comes off as sort of   "a nice holiday we’re all having over here; oh, there’s some golf actually being played out there?".  The US Open & PGA could use a lot more commercial restraint as well. We obviously don’t see too much of the US sportscasters over this side of the Atlantic.. but Brent "bastketball man" Musberger sure stank up something awful during those one or two years he did the Butler cabin bit at the Masters.

I liked the late Henry Longhurst – especially after his usual lunch & luncheon beverages. Some of that British reserve melted away and his stories & comments were great. "You Have to Hit It" Allis is also pleasant to listen to. My take for the most underrated golf announcer is Judy Rankin.  When she says something it’s almost always an accurate statement of fact OR a good guess about what’s going to happen.  She’s a gem surrounded by several guys that should be selling used cars.

Agreed.  He has done an admirable job of stepping into Howard Cosell’s shoes as the man we most love to hate.

I’m not too crazy about him as a play-by-play guy but I think he was great as the host of CBS’s NFL Today studio show.  He basically created a new breed of sportscaster in that position, and to this day no one has done it better IMO.
